ok so i just got new lights i have 4x54w t5s and 2x250w metal halides and now my temperature is staying high the glass top isn't hot it's just warm to the touch but the temp is fluctuating from 82 in the morning to 86-87 in mid day....... any suggestions...my temp before was at 81.

Remove the glass top and replace with egg crate. You are getting the greenhouse effect. If you take the top off, more water can evaporate = cooler temperature. The egg crate will let the water "breathe," even though it may block out a little light.

By the way, if your water temperatures are hitting high eighties you need to cut your lights out and put a house fan to blow across the top of the water. It will cool down much faster.

Better than eggcrate...

Better than eggcrate...

Another suggestion - rather than eggcrate under your 250W MH, you might consider that "netting" found at garden supply stores used to keep birds off plants and fruit trees. Build a frame from plastic window screen material, attach the netting and place it on the top of your tank. It allows almost full light penetration and keeps the jumpers IN your tank...

Just another option which allows good evaporation/temp transfer from your water...

Also, consider a fan on your sump timed to come on when your actinic lights come on... I use a Wal-Mart clamp-on personal fan cliiped to the side of my sump pointed down to the water...

Bingo.

Are the lights enclosed in a canopy or not?

2 x 250W over a 75g is serious wattage that requires an open water surface with fan(s) blowing across to move the hot air away from the water surface and encourage evaporation which has the effect of cooling the water.

Or, spend some coin and get a chiller. First option is much cheaper though ;)
