ok so i just got new lights i have 4x54w t5s and 2x250w metal halides and now my temperature is staying high the glass top isn't hot it's just warm to the touch but the temp is fluctuating from 82 in the morning to 86-87 in mid day....... any suggestions...my temp before was at 81.

also my alkalinity and calcium are both really high is there anything else i can do to bring them down besides water changes.....

I believe that your lights can be overheating the tank without causing the glass to feel hot. I would assume that the light heats the water but the glass keeps the heat from escaping. I think you will find that the advice you receive on here will be to either run a chiller (very expensive) or take the glass top off the tank and set up a fan to blow over the surface of the water for evaporative cooling. Beware if you take the top off you risk fish jumping out unless you cover it with either eggcrate or bird netting. The eggcrate will actually allow "skinny" fish like gobies to jump through it though.

+1 on fan or fans to blow across surface, that lowers temp a lot. Try that first and if you need to go lower then prolly a chiller is your soln. Also, how high is the light from the water surface?

the lights are 12 1/2 inches off the top...

thanks everyone for your advice.....very appreciative

open top and cooling fans blowing across the top of the water you will have more evaporation but it will knock most of the access heat from the tank

I'm trying to figure why your calcium would be high. What test levels are you getting? It's possible that your salt mix is high in calcium - what brand are you using? It's also not uncommon for the test kit itself to be off. What kit are you using? You could get a fellow reefer or your LFS to test a sample of your water with another kit and see what results they get. Unless you're introducing it somehow, and your salt mix would be the only real source unless you're dosing it - which I assume you're not - there's no reason why you would have elevated numbers.
