Wazzel's mostly SPS 120

Curious about your new tank. Did you buy directly through Planet, or one of their dealers? I'd contacted them about a tank, but never received a reply, so I don't know if that's simply because they're a small shop and really busy, or they work through dealers only.

I ordered it through a dealer. It is a stock size, but they did not have any in stock so I am waiting to have one built. It might be ready next week.

Hmm - OK. I'll give one of their dealers a call and see if they'll ship (none are close to me, unfortunately). Thanks!

Tank will be coming with 2-1" drains and 2-3/4" returns in the box. Want to do a regular herbie and two return pumps. I would like approx. 5x through the sump (600-800 gph). Want to keep the plumbing simple this time and use submersibles Any recommendation for a pump that will give me 300-400 gph at 5ft that is quiet? I use a sicce 2.0 for my frag tank and it is quiet, but right on the edge of what I need (317 gph @ 5 ft)

Still no tank, there was a shipping mix up last week so it may be 2 more weeks before I take possession. Really not a big deal, my kids are in band so we got football games and marching festivals until early November. I roadie for them so all my free time is taken for a while.

Considering going with gyre pumps instead of vortecs. I am thinking 2-130's horizontal blowing back to front evenly space on the back and 2-150's vertical near the corner on the back blowing front-ish.

Comments?

I looked at the gyre, it's a big old black stick and in every tank I've seen it in it looks like a big old black stick mounted to the side of the tank. Not sure why I don't like it since they do work so well. I may be jealous I can't use one situated horizontally on my tank because it's so narrow.

I've also tried regular pumps mounted on the back blowing forward and they tended to drive bubbles to and down the front of the tank, ruining the view.

I have to say, I love my gyres. I have one in either end of the tank, blowing at each other. I had them on alternating mode and off set, timing wise. They would alternat blowing across the tank every two minutes. I found that they would, over time begin to synchronize, though. This isn't bad either when one blows for about a minute, then the other kicks in for a minute, then the first one turns off.. Gives you flow in one direction, then turbulence and then movement in the other direction. But once they synchronize completely, they are just blasting at each other.. I finally but them on a controller.
But there is a way, by changing the impeller set up in one gyre to have one run in reverse while the other runs forward to get alternating flow..
In the end I added a couple of tunze streams as well, also on a controller to really break up the flow patterns..
I think the gyres are amazing at moving water and pretty versatile- and quiet with the new magnet assembly...
And no, I don't work for them! :) I just like'em..

Thanks for the comments. I plan on painting the back black so power heads can kind of blend in to the back ground. I really like vortecs, but I also like to look across my tank from the sides and would like to have all three viewing panels unobstructed if possible.

My tank arrived at the LFS. Going to go pay the balance and try to bring it home tomorrow. Would go today, but got an away game to go to with my kids.

Pesky kids... Always getting in the way of quality reefing... :)

Kids are never in the way. Spending time with them is the most important thing I do. The Sunday night football camera crew is at the game. They might be part of the local spotlight. We are not winning right now.

It is home. We did not get to unload it from the truck yet. I also got a 40 breeder for my sump today. The LFS a had a gently used one in his stock room and sold it to me for $20. Score.

If you are ever near BR John at Aqua hut has and uses some black sheets that stick to the background of your aquarium. I have them on my current setup it's durable and easily removable in case of resale.

Thanks for the info. The tank came with the back black. It was an unexpected surprise. Happy it did, that saves me some work. Now I just need to decide if I am going to paint the bottom white or not. Tanks will be bare bottom so I am leaning towards painting.
