Wear gloves in your tank

Also be really careful about simply moving palythoa from one tank to another, and very, very careful about aerosolizing tank water. I've had two friends in the past month become very ill after water from a tank with zoanthids became aerosolized (one fragging, one just a lot of splashing from microbubbles). Both systemic symptoms...flu like sysmptoms, fever, chills, breathing difficulties. Don't know if we are seeing more potent strains coming through lstely, or just noticing it more, but I feel like there have been a lot more bad events recently than I've seen in years, and I have been giving the reef toxins lecture almost 10 years now.,
 
Hand surgery? What kind of surgery?

Ug, yeah...I am actually not scared of palytoxin (you have to be pretty careless to have a problem with this, it seems) but I AM scared of mycobacteria!!!! Know a guy with this creeping crud all up one arm....ugh! :(
 
Its my hand and I just came off antibiotics. Dr will see me in 2 weeks unless my hand swells up again. He said if this happens go straight to emergency room and he will take it from there

That's facinating they had to make an incision! So sorry you had to be the one we learned this from!

Can you clarify exactly what "aerosolized" means/entails? Are you saying that a person fragged a zoo under water and/or disrupted zoos and by doing either of these the surrounding water became toxic? Thus any water removed was toxic?

If the link doesn't work, then just go to their site and search on atlas nitrile gloves. I just got them today and it appears that they will work out well. They go all the way up to my shoulder. They are much thicker than the normal disposable gloves but less cumbersome than those blue and orange ones. I'm going to try them out and see how it goes.

the link works....let us know how they work out.....I've been looking for a decent pair of gloves that will allow us to work in the tank without getting injured.

Do take a few minutes to check it out. Some of the pictures are downright scary. IIRC, his thumb nail never came back.
 
i was in the hospital from my tank twice (10 days one time).. little by little im back to no gloves again, unless i frag.. i also had saltwater go in my eye from cutting a mushroom, terrible experience as well... my hands are constantly in the tank... i wash well and take showers after coral mounting and so on.. i think in certain tanks there is things you cant run away from.. also each of us can fight off different bac... so better safe than sorry

most of the time i wont use gloves

I used them this weekend for some tank maintenance and they worked out very well. I highly recommend them.

FTR, as long as you are not affiliated with the business in some way, RC has no issue to posting links to products. This vendor happens to be a Reef Central sponsor, but even if they were not, it would be fine.
Now, if you or say, your brother were Dr. Race Foster, promoting his business would not be okay.
Ebay or Craigslist links are not allowed as there is too much potential for the link to go back to the poster's own sale.

Thanks Chris....so these gloves allow you to basically work on things and get a good grip on what you are doing, (IE: fragging, mounting, moving things around etc)....not clumsy and difficult?
