Wear gloves (we all know this)

Yesterday I went in to school to do some work on the aquarium. I got a tiny scrape on my finger, like we've all gotten hundreds of times before, and didn't think anything of it.

This morning, I woke up to this:

I printed off some info about mycobacterium marinum and vibrio, and headed off to after hours care. I explained the situation to the PA and he prescribed some doxycycline and gave me a tetanus shot.

I've seen too many threads on RC where people wait until they see that red line of infection traveling up their arms before they go to the doc. I have no interest in a hospital stay with IV antibiotics. Ain't nobody got no time for dat!

This is most likely nothing serious, but the takeaway is this: If you're going to be a fool and not wear gloves, make sure you get medical attention ASAP when the inevitible happens.

I'm sure I'll be better about wearing gloves when working in the tank, but knowing me, I will probably get complacent again...

I have never had an issue with cuts or infections or really any type of issue at all, but after reading and hearing some crazy stories about palyotoxins and such, I now wear ob-gyn gloves meant for impregnating livestock. I was always worried about the oils from my skin getting into the water and creating a scum on the surface, and since I've started wearing gloves that scum has been gone and the surface is as clear as can be expected. Hope all works out for you with your future glove wearing!

Scott it's most likely a reaction to some Nepthea juice. I usually just wash out well with soap and apply antibiotic cream.

I wouldn't doubt it.

The thing that concerned me is that the redness and swelling was occurring a short distance from the actual scrape.

I'm taking the "better safe than sorry" approach here.:smurf:
