Project: Skinning/Trimming Out Stand
Started: Saturday 4pm-4am, Sunday 1pm-?
Previous Experience: NONE
Material Cost: more than I wanted/afford to spend
Fingers Lost to Miter Saw: almost 2, twice.

I couldn't contain it anymore, I wasn't going to post until done to show a finished product, but I couldn't wait, so here it is.

I decided to go ahead and spruce up the 2x4 box I made and trim it out, and as mentioned I have never in my life doen anything with wood, or tools, heck I had to go online to figure out how to read 16th's and 8th's on a measuring tape.

It's not done yet, still have to do the top surface of the stand, and start on canopy tonight, yes tonight....6hr energy shots keep me going.

Picked up all my materials, set up shop and well here is the result:

Gross, this was what I originally did back in November:

I even painted it thinking I was going to keep it this way:

I stripped all the cheap plywood I originally skinned it with, and started from scratch.

Anyways, that's my 1st piece of carpentry work ever, great learning experience, not done yet, but hopefully it looks ok...will post more pictures when it's all done.

Credit to this design goes to Rich (marino420td): http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=787189, and Will16: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=787189, both have lots of build step by step pictures, without it I would not have know how to do this.

Ok, back to work now, going to get started on the canopy, right after I have another 6hr energy, hopefully I don't lose a finger, man that was scary, I counted them twice to make sure they are all still there.

Jealous. Very nice work. I know I'm no carpenter - chopped my finger tip half off putting in wood floors. BTW - superglue is amazing. I still have the tip.

thanks. yeah i cut a few pieces an inch away from the blade on the compund miter saw, it launched the piece of wood like a bullet, that happened twice, made me look at my hand a few times to make sure i hadnt lost a finger.

Looking good! What type of wood is that, and how much would you guess all of the materials cost?

I used 3/4" Birch Plywood for the skin itself, but with all the choices you can use others, just prepare for the $$, all the layers of trim were made up 1x2 and 1x6 Poplar wood, and used 2 sizes of Egg and Dart trim.

In wood alone I would say about $300+/-, I didn't anticipate that much, but once I bought some I had to finish it.

Dude, that looks nice. You led me to believe you had no idea what you were doing. It turned out fantastic!

Rich,
thanks, I didn't have any idea, had I not got the details from you I wouldn't have been able to figure it out. Thanks for your help, I'll post hopefuly later tonight when the canopy is done.

Post a pic of your stand on here.

very nice, I see you ended up not hiring the red neck :lolspin:

Sal,
I told you, I'm about instant gratification, wasn't going to wait till today to have it done so I went full speed ahead myself.

Thanks for your help the other day as well.

By the way, post a pic of your stand on here.
