Well, I'm finally back with a Nuvo 38

Great looking tank. Enjoy!

Thanks. As usual, when you first get these things started it feels like they are more work than joy, but she'll get there!

Are they bleaching due too light intensity?

Nope. Apparently it's an alkalinity issue. Got that all fixed with a WC and some dosing over the weekend and they are starting to look a whole lot better.

I think what caused it is that I dosed some leftover Reef Complete I had without dosing alk and apparently I overdosed on the calcium which lowered the alk. It was below 6!!

I was hoping to get away with no dosing on this thank and just keeping up with weekly water changes, but I'm simply not getting around to weekly water changes.

Between the clam and a few stony's, and it being such a small volume of water, I think I'm going to have to dose or get back on track with weekly WCs; the bi-weekly water changes just aren't cutting it.

I've got the levels all settled up now so going forward, I'm going to follow the BRS 2-part dosing guidelines.

But no, the lights have actually performed really well so far.

And last but not least, after a couple of Black Ice clowns.....this guy made it in the tank:

I'll take some more pictures of the livestock over the weekend and post them.

As always, thanks to everyone on this forum. You are all truly an invaluable resource to me and to every other hobbyist.

How is that livestock coming along? Fish in particular. What have you put in? And what are you planning ?

As much as I love coral, I also love fish so knowing I was going to "overstock" the tank, I decided to add the skimmer and I'm glad I did. I've already added all the fish I am going to add though. They are:

2 McCosker's flasher wrasses
1 leaopard wrasse
2 black ice clowns
1 midas blenny
1 hi-fin red banded goby / pistol combo

Coral wise I have 2 acros, 1 scoly, 1 orange plate, 1 superman monti frag, 1 rainbow monti frag and a few zoa's.

I also have a couple of cleaners, 1 coral banded shrimp, a blue squamosa clam, and the RBTA.

Other than the montipora frags and the alaklinity issue, everything has been doing really, really well. All the fish are eating great.

Once I make sure everything stabilizes, my only future plans are to add a few more SPS pieces.

Very nice. You worried about the wrasses not having enough pods to eat, or are they feeding plenty on other food as well?

Eating more than plenty on everything I'm feeding. They even go crazy for pellets which I feed about 1x per week.

looks good bro. its nice to see you are back in the game after selling all your equipment. best wishes and keep posting some pics. i really like the nice clean look you've got going with the tank.

Love the custom light bracket... you are off to a great start! ;)

Thanks! And thanks for answering all my calls asking about the correct thread size and length for the mounting screws!

On another note, I got to thinking that the light may not cool as well since the top of the bracket doesn't have any holes or ventilation. I was thinking I could actually rout slots into the top of the bracket if you think it would be necessary.

That said, with the cooling fan on the underside of the light, and seeing as how the top of the radion is a solid piece of acrylic anyway, I didn't think it would make any difference.

Let me know what you think though. Thanks.

Did you build the amount for the light or buy it? I am running a Radion on my 38G and really like it.

I had the mount built by a client of mine. Faulkner Plastics of Miami. They do amazing acrylic work.

Thank you sir. It's good to be back!

@Rogger....gotta get to it. I'll try soon.

Great looking tank! Really like your light mount! I always like to looking at fellow IM owner setups. Keep up the great work!

yes....but I just haven't had a second to snap some photos. I'm struggling with nitrates right now. They are hovering at about 25 and I believe that that is what's causing some algae pockets on my sand bed. Other than that, things look alright except for the monti pieces that are still not doing well. Even after they started to look better after I got my alk back in check, they slowly started to lose color again. The other SPS pieces are doing fine with great polyp extension, but they have lost some color.

Im not sure at this point if it's a light intensity issue or what. I have them sitting on the sand bed so I would tend to think not. All my other corals are doing really well.

One of the flasher wrasses decided to commit suicide and leaped to his death.

I was wondering about the Midas Blenny. No close calls with him? I had one for about 18 hours who found a way to leap out of my covered Nuvo 16. He seemed determined to get out.

Really enjoying your setup - lots of original thought.

Hey man...I live relatively close to you and if you want you can try one of the monties I have...green sour apple, orange or xfactor. They grow well under intense light. Just let me know and I'll rip off a piece :)

Gibbnal...so far the Midas Benny hasn't tried to kill himself. A couple of times I've seen him swimming at the surface but till now, I have seen him really jump at all.

Gatoralum, thanks for the offer. I may very well take you up on that offer as soon as I get my params in check and get my doser online.

It's crazy how much less stable these little systems are when compared to larger tanks!

You must be a gator, cuz 'mando never offered me anything other than a hard time, lol! Looking great. Need updated pics!
