Well.........Shoot!Overflow silicone split!

Reef264

Where's The Reef?
Hey there, Hi there, Ho there!

I noticed where my over flow box section connects to the left wall, it has split in the middle. It is spreading too.So, what are my options here?Im not in a position to takr the tank down and re-silicone the overflow.Another option here would be an upgrade, to a 180g, that I found on Craigslist brand new, never used, for $350, w/dual overflows, so that is a possibility.I don't have an exact picture of my silicone issue, but I found one pretty close. Here it is.

Jeremy, The tank is roughly 115 gallons (60"x18"x25").The over flow is a single overflow, it lies in the left rear if the tank, it was made by the tank manufacturer. The tank has only had water in it a little over a year, so this really isn't good, I custom made the stand and canopy myself, it took a while, so I wold have to do that over, luckily I have passion for this hobby, so I will continue.I already have a 40g sump, 200g skimmer, I would have to do a different return, but that's about It, maybe a couple of vortech Mp-40's.I may just have a custom 300g built (120"x24"x24").This is pretty overwhelming.

Contact the maker.

Are you sure it is seperating?

There should be no reason the overflow box would be pulling away.

Shut off the return pump and watch for water leaing into the overflow box.

I'm positive it is separating, I marked it with a marker a few days ago, and it has spread some, not much, but some.I will shut my return off and see if any water leaks through.I am puzzled by this, and maybe a little upset, Not sure how I feel right now.

UPGRADE TO THE 180! NOW IS YOUR CHANCE!!!!!

If your a reasonable man like the rest of us in this hobby, the overflow box broke for just this reason alone....hehehehe
:D

BigCountry74,

That's looking like what I'm going to do.Once I call the guy about it and see who made the 180g, so this doesn't happen all over again.

This is a Wierd problem, wouldn't it have to be some crappy Silicone work for the overflow to have seperated?I mean as bad as this seams(pun intended), it could have been so much worse!Im glad this happened in a way, because what if this happened in any of the foundational corners!it would have been bad news for me chief!

Mr. Demeanor,

As much as I would like to fix this, I think this is a sign from above to get another tank while my floors are still dry.Good Idea though, top shelf!

Call your tank manufacturer and try to get a replacement also, then you can sell it and make a few bucks to recoup the cost of the new tank

I've seen some pretty crafty excuses to upgrade but this one takes the cake! :)

Agree on the upgrade, return the faulty tank for a refund or exchange and call it a day. Glad you caught that before it became a bigger problem. Good luck!

Greech,

I plan on getting some answer for this, and hopefully some money back.

I appreciate the kind words.

Jeez, is this a rhetorical question?

Up the grade!

Or you can contact the manufacturer to confirm that it's all your fault. The choice is yours.

And BTW, I strongly disagree with the advice that you get the 180 from CL. Normally, this would be an excellent choice. But you did say you are considering a custom-made 300g, did you not? By saying that, you have effectively committed yourself to the 300g. Sorry, but I believe the doctrine of res ipsa loquitur (the thing speaks for itself) applies here.

Go for it.

They words did come out of my fingers.I will sometime, but after pondering it, it would be a big decision.I am going to do something about it!Something good!

id like to know what the people say that built it. im betting cash they say because its on a DIY stand that they wont cover the damage, which is stupid.

piece of mind is worth a lot of cash, so maybe a new tank is going to close the book on your piece of mind.

if you go with the CL tank make sure you see the thing filled with water before any cash exchanges hands. go over the thing with the "im gonna find something wrong" attitude, if anything gives you pause dont buy it

hope this works out for the better for you though, tank problems suxor!

LaOtIn,

I am a little afraid to call the people, being that it would mean I was insinuating that that this was there fault, and that I was playing the blame game, and pointing fingers.Which is the las thing I want to do, this LFS and I know each other pretty well, and I dont want to make them get the wrong idea about me as a person.I may have to though, because I have to do something about this in the next few days, I am pretty bum fuzzled about this whole thing.I'm keeping a sharp eye on the split though, It isn't spreading anymore that I have noticed, but it got that way due to spreading, so I am pretty sure it will keep spreading. The stand and Canopy were built by my brother, a seriously awesome carpenter, his work is second to none, We built this stand pretty heavy duty, leveled and true.I just always hoped this never happened to me, but, I'm in deep water it would seam.
