what a disaster

let me start by saying.. I am an idiot and knew the consequences. What was the topic of the last meeting??? So I checked my params yesterday and my Alk, Ca, and Mg were low. I thought they would be since I have not dosed in a few weeks. I doubled checked by taking a sample to the CR. Thanks Abby and Russ. :) Then I went home and caught that shrimp  After that, I decided to start correcting my low Ca, alk, and Mg. I think by the out come I was a little over zealous when adding them. The tank looked a little cloudy late last night, but not when I added. I woke up this morning and went to make breakfast, turned to see my tank and all I saw was white water. I was at the CR as soon as they opened to get water. Long story short, none of my SPS have flesh. the polyps are possibly still there on some. I am going to leave it alone and see what happens. All this right after I made 18 sps frags for the swap. here are some bad pictures.

Holy crap... that sucks.

Or wait - you've got lots of those new LE Arctic SPS.

What happened to slowly adjusting over a week while monitoring and testing. "Nothing good happens fast in a reef tank."

What to say??? Do you know how much you tried to increase the parameters that caused that? Might be a good learning opportunity for others. Sorry for the loss:(

Dave

Well, that is both, not as bad as I was expecting, and horrific at the same time... :( Looks like a bunch of your stuff is toast, including most of the frags you made, that good size Valida colony and likely that Hawkins you got from me last week, as well as a few of your other SPS frags... Seems all your zoanthids, lps and clams are going to pull through fine though... :)

This is especially true with SPS... I think I said it at the meeting, but if not, you want to make changes to your tank slowly...

Stability
Promotes
Success

Alkalinity is probably one of the worst things you can change overnight... Or rather, the most detrimental to your tank... If you are raising or lowering it, you should probably 1 dKH per week...

Thanks. i did everything I knew not to do... and why.... I don't know. I dosed 2 extra ounces of my Alk 2 part and 2extra mls of the bottled ca. When all my parameters were constant, i was dosing 2 oz Alk and 2 mLs Ca per week. I guess I thought I could get away with it, but we all can see the results.

My LPS, clams, zoas frogspan and montis seem like they will be fine. The only SPS that I think may pull through will be the red planet and maybe the blue prostata and purple stag. I think everything else is toast, but I will give it a while.

I think i learned my lesson with tank changes. And I am now in the market for some type of automatic dosing.

Here's a crazy question... Did you ever test your Magnesium???

Edit: Just re-read your first post... How low was your Mg???

Well Paul, you've made me feel better about doing nearly the same thing, but sometimes God watches after fools like me. None of my stuff was affected. So sorry about yours.

Wow that sucks Paul:(
To be honest with the demands of clinics I'm almost wishing I didn't have a tank to take care of right now because I don't have the time. Mg is one of those things that I don't worry too much about. It's good to have it in the right ranges but yours didn't sound that out of whack
At any rate you are welcome to frags of whatever SPS you had that I still have for free of course......and others that I have plenty of.
This happens to EVERYONE eventually and it's usually by doing something we know we shouldn't but think we can get away with it. Don't beat yourself up too bad about it........it just happens sooner or later

Chris.

dang dude sorry my alk was low and I have been trying to raise it but I think I will slow down now so see you helped someone else there is your silver lining

Thanks chris, just let me know when you get a minute with clinics. i think I am going to wait a while to see what happens, but it does not look good. PM sent

I always do things I know I shouldn't... :p Rarely do I get away with it... :rolleye1:

sorry for your loss - your tank was really looking good after your light changes, I hate to see this. On automatic dosing, I bought a litermeter 3 about a year ago, probably the best item I have bought for the tank. I dose my alk/calc along with my make-up water. I just need to refill the buckets about once a week. Hang in there!

I just hope this is the only time this happens to me.. especially since I will be moving to a new state hopefully after May.

So here is an update. I took out the ones with no flesh and no polyps- keeping the skeletons. Hopefully I can run across a calcium reactor somewhere.

Here is my tank now

Quick update. Lost the rest of my SPS. Checked the parameters today and they are ph 8.3, alk 8, and Ca 400. They just need to hold. I have a doser on the way to prevent this from happenin again. I remade Randy's 2 part and used the calculator to determine the amounts to add per day.

On another note... this is the worst week I have had in a while. First I lost all my SPS and now I can't find my cat. She is an indoor only cat and she is not in the house. :sad2:
