what am I doing wrong?

when setting up a new tank - RO/DI with salt premixed, add rock, wait, wait, wait, gently introduce fish. Just watched an episode of tanked...1100 gallons of tap water which was too hot so they added ice from the ice machine...(assuming) they threw salt in the tank to let it mix...and added a few grand in fish. all in a few hours.

I'm thinking I'm doing this the hard way...

Yeah... somehow I'm thinking that the intense drama of measuring ammonia, nitrite and nitrate for 4 or 5 weeks, followed by a big water change, doesn't translate well to the little screen.

I didn't see the show so maybe I'm wrong but they trim these shows down allot like sometimes hours and even days get taken out due to little activity or unusable footage. So who really knows just how long it really took. Sucks I missed the show tho. Also agree with Johnny C as well.

This show got a lot of talk at the frag swap yesterday. Maybe its time I get cable and a day off to actually watch it. I have so far only seen the short promo videos online. But the stories of what goes on keep getting better and better. Well perhaps that is key, its entertainment. Fun stuff to watch.

I saw the part they put the guy's wife in the shark tank. Do you guys really think they had no one else that could do it? They have a huge crew of people there must be a teenage kid who could jump in the tank. No the wife in the shark tank makes good tv and that is why they did it.

Being in the same type of business (just on a much smaller level) I can say that pros sometimes do things a bit differently. I have known about this company for some time (way before this show)and would have to take a guess that they really did not get to where they are by making stupid moves and mistakes. They need to keep those tanks looking good with live fish. And I would guess that we all could learn much more from them and not the other way around.

Being a tv show they must edit all the boring stuff or even stage things to make the show more fun. Think of it this way. Do you think people are playing marriage counselor about the way a guy finds his wife on the Bachelor show? No they just watch for the pretty people and juicy stories.

It is if anything, entertaining. That's why it's on tv...entertainment value. It's not a documentary.

IMO if you just look at it like, "Wow, they made an aquarium out of that?!", we'll get that entertainment value lol.

Who knows what goes on with all the editing!

I know one thing..those coral inserts are FUGLY IMO lol.

I know one thing..those coral inserts are FUGLY IMO lol.

I never liked faked decorations even long before my adventures in keeping a real reef, I just always felt like if you want to have the look then you should do it for real.

And I have to side with G, if these guys have been doing silly stuff like that for real they couldnt possibly have much success in keeping things alive long term, I think editing is key with this show. Just think about all the things and time we put into our builds that doesnt make it into our build threads.

I'm with Johnny C, but as far as "they couldn't be that bad and still be in business"... if you have a low of money to throw at these guys two things: you don't care and you don't know any better. I know a lot of less than stellar people that make a business in this hobby using questionable practices.

Your doing nothing wrong neccesarily. If your following at least the general guidelines for the average reef hobbyist. The show is not supposed to project what it's like for most hobbyists.

The show tanked is purely for everyones entertainment. Like most "reality" shows and I say that loosely.. There are a lot of things that are made up (situations on the show) on purpose for the drama/comedic value in entertainment purposes. There also are a lot of things not told on the show on purpose.

Like the fact where they show the guys flying to LA to get wholesale fish and all of a sudden later they are putting them in the tank made for the customer...just as one example. What really happened afterward is the fish sat for 4-6 weeks at the atm site in Quarantine while the customers tank was being finished. Also (not all) but many of these tanks took some months to finish based on the custom builds, parts orders, and leadtime in the manufacturing process. Multiple orders(tanks) for different customers are done at the same time for weeks to months. It's like any other manufacturing company in that respect.

The company is also a lot larger than the show leads on to. They have been in business for many many years. It's definitely not a fly by night organization. Though the show likes to emphacise the family friendly roots and feel to it, which is still true.. They are quite a corporate conglomerate of high end fish tanks worldwide. They actually have hundreds of atm employees and sub contractors they use for various work. Las Vegas is their USA headquarters. But they have a European division and a Chinese Division located right in China. Both headed by vice presidents who work for the company along with all of their divisional employees.

They also have on site and have done true Reef Aquariums and Freshwater Aquariums as well. The shows focus is not on those simply for one main reason. Most of their customers are either Commercial organizations, public aquariums, and Wealthy private home owners who want a beautiful High End Fish tank. But most are NOT Hobbyists and don't want to partake in maintenance involved in such things. Short of just feedings.. They want to enjoy the tank. That's why it's simple as far as the fake coral. Most are meant for the beauty of the fish because those are the kind of customers they have.

Personally, the company and owners have some Hobbyist Reef tanks themselves. They have also had a few customers with such. Live Corals can also be purchased from them. In stock or by special order. But again, most of their clients are not in the realm of hobbyist aquarium keeping.

Long story short, the show is entertaining and meant for fun to it's viewers.
Whether your a Hobbyist, basic Fish aquarium lover, or Novice. It's meant to simple entertaining television. Not Hobbyist laden facts and strict terminology. Unfortunately, we understand all that.. But it wouldn't sell to the public, ratings wise if it was just for the serious Hobbyists. Drama and Fun sell on TV. Facts are often left out.

i don't mind the show. they do commercial FO tanks. a much better option for many IMO. sure it's poo reality. better than listing to entitled brats rant ,or watching survior.

The tap water is what got me, and well...the ice! They do custom make some pretty sick stuff. I'd love to see the filtration behind these systems

a few reef shops in roc run tap, most commercial ice makers have ro filters. for fish only , you can away with a lot. basically a big qt tank. ro really isn't needed, or practical on a lg scale. filtration can be simplistic or done by WC.
