What are some things that would make a fish loss color?

Are there certain things that are known to make fish loss their color? My Orange shoulder tang, which is am adult and ive had for over a year now has slowly started to loss color, he looks more yellow now, dosent have that distinct 2 tone color that adults usually have.

Im just wondering if Nitrates can cause this or what. He gets fed good, alot of algae and meaty foods.

Mine changes colour according to stress. Not for very long tho, someone gives chase and he'll get darker for maybe a minute, then right back to normal.

There are many factors in color loss; environmental, stress, disease. What kind of system is he in, how long have you had him, what are you feeding and what is your water quality like?
