What are your thoughts on growth

Last sps tank I had set up, had great growth, color, and PE. Only thing I did to that tank was keep up CA, ALK and do weekly 10% water changes. KISS seems to work quite well for me.

I would not say I have the best sps tank, I do have good extentions on the sps, but I know there are better out there then my tank. I do have good growth from the corals and color, I just keep up with the cal and alk and mag.

I did add a little bit to much gfo I went from 65 to 90 grams and it did how ever make some of the coral loose color but other then that everything is good.

Yes gfo can make the color go away it is called iron burn in the corals and to much gfo in a small system can de stabilize the alk in the water causing iron burn.

Ok first off why does every body thing lighting has to do with growth in a big way . Well it doesnt light has very little to do with growth . Lighting is just for the sps zooxanthellae that live in the coral tissues and gives them much of there color. Zooxanthellea which intakes carbon dioxide and produce oxygen and carbohydrated for the corals. This is what good lighting does for sps. Growth now is throw stable alk, cal, and mag at NSW levels . Thats alk from 6.5 to 8.0 DKH Cal from 320-400 and Mag 1200-1300. Sps in with wild reef get no light sometimes for a good mounth and have good Growth without the lack of lighing . Acropora are able to grow 10inch a year under these conditions. And yes salinity and temp also play a roll in this . To do this is not hard to do at all . My alk stay alk stays at 8dkh and doesnt move at all same with cal 380 all the time .

This is a 1 mounth growth pic

While I completely agree with stable Alk/Ca/Mag I don't agree with lighting has little to do with it. If you want to prove yourself right or me wrong on this then leave your setup and params exactly like they are and switch your light to a power compact light source. I bet you will have almost no growth and it more then likely would not survive for too long.

You state reefs go without light for a month at a time but that is in no way true. Clouds block direct light but there is still some light getting thru and the UV rays are actually bounced around between the water and the clouds. Cloudy days at the beach will cause sunburn faster then a sunny day will. Lucky for the reefs the water will filter out most of the harmful UV's.

I guess you didnt read it right the Lighting is just for the sps zooxanthellae that live in the coral tissues and gives them much of there color. Zooxanthellea which intakes carbon dioxide and produce oxygen and carbohydrated for the corals . Yes you need a high par bulb for them to help them with this process

I did read that but I do not think that you understand the full relationship between the corals and the zooxanthellae. You might not also understand the basics of photosynthisis as the zooxanthellae are using the light as part of the whole process.

Symbiosis between polyps and zooxanthellae are common in corals. It is a mutualistic relationship (meaning both partners benefit from the interaction). The polyps are Cnidarians (same group as jellyfish). They lay down a calcified 'skeleton' and predate on small marine organisms using stings to catch prey. The zooxanthellae are basically a type of plankton that photosynthesis to produce energy from sunlight.

They benefit each other in various ways; for example, the polyps contribute a skeleton that (like the trunk of a tree) helps the photosynthesising zooxanthellae to get closer to the sunlight. Also the skeleton provides shelter and protection, while the stinging polyps keep away predators, giving the zooxanthellae a safe home. In return, the zooxanthellae generate most of the energy/food the coral needs from sunlight, which the polyps cannot do.

Basically if you do not feed the zooxanthellae enough light then it will die and so will the coral.

Your forgetting that sps can also make there own food source with out light so thay dont stave this is when thay turn brown from lack of light . Thay can go for mounths with out light and not die. See light play a roll in growth but a very small roll in it.

Ok so when there a storm for a mounth with no sun all sps die in the reef . Thats what your saying

:headwalls:

You said that they get no light for a month not me. I clearly stated that even during cloudy days, i.e. stormy days, that there is STILL light/uv rays the get thru the clouds.

Also I am not saying that light is all that is needed. What I am saying is that both are needed. You even state that you know that they need high par so that right there contradicts what you are trying to prove. No light = no par.

I am taking myself out of this conversation i fear if i continue i will call people names, question their genetics, make judgments about their mental ability and then I might tarnish my reputation for being nice and sweet.

good luck and have at it ok ok I need to say 2 things
