what are your turnover rates?

hey all,
Ive read a lot of information regarding total system turn over. Some say 4-5x other say 10x, and then I've heard as much as 30x. Im FINALLY starting my build and have put my over flow together and Im not sure what I want to do as far as a return pump.

40B display with coast 2 coast weir to external box. 20L sump. Planning a zoa dominated tank with some LPS (for now, I'm sure ill throw in a spa or two). I was going to plan for 10x turn over (400gph) with around 300gph through the sump via return/overlow and the remainder coming from powerheads in the display. I plan on having a refugium with macro algae in the sump.

What turnover are you all running?

Are you asking for turn over thru the sump. Or turn over rate in the tank. I turn over 10x thru my sump and hour and over 50x in tank per hr. But I am mostly sps.

Through the sump- sorry for not specifying. My overflow has the capability of handing up to around 900gph so I have the ability for about 20x turnover, although I'm sure that type of volume isn't necessary.

Your volume thru your sump should be the amount of water you need to effectively clean( skimming, algae or other) add your makeup alk/calc/mag... And another other process and return that water to the tank. Rinse repeat. It all has to do with what your comfortable with abut I wouldn't try anything less then 5x and hour.

I also shoot for the maximum thru my sump before creating micro bubbles then back it off a little more..

When I had my 75 I went with a 700 gph flow through the tank. It was a bit fast, so I tuned it down a bit. 500gph should be fine. It doesn't have to go too fast, what are you going to do for in tank movement? In the reefer 450 I have two little gyres and they both run at 50% and it's plenty. If your goal is LPS and Zoas you won't need crazy flow. Most LPS likes moderate to low flow. Although having the ability to kick it up to move detritus is a nice to have too. Also helps prevent cyano loving dead spots.

I was going to use two jebao rw4 which can be set to push between 100gph to 1000gph

I have around 8-10 total tank water volume turnover an hour.

I have high flow in my display tank as it is mostly Sps and my frag tank is dialed back for the Zoas and the baby clownfish

That should be plenty of flow for a 40 breeder.
