What close up lense for Nikon D80????

Hey guys,

after seeing all those awesome coral closeups on here we decided we wanted to pick up a new lense and attempt some of our own.

We don't know a lot about photography (pretty close to nothing haha). So we have no clue what kind of lense we need to be able to capture extreme close up coral shots.

If anyone can give us just a brief run down andlet us know what you use (maybe some pics you've taken also:D ) it would be much appreciated!

Thanks!!!

I'm a Canon shooter but you'll want a non-zooming macro lens in the area of 100mm.

I believe that Nikon sells a 105 that's probably what you're looking for.

Cheers

thanks beerguy!

so basically we just take off our current lense (the original one) and put the new macro on?

on the lense we have now, there's threads at the end (assuming for an extra attachment, don't know what though) could we screw it on there to shoot even closer?

Yes - that's sort of the point of a DSLR

The lens that is on now comes off and you switch to the macro for close up work.

The threads in the end of the lens are for filters.

cool thanks, would you recommend a auto focus lense or a manual focus? we're just on the nikon website right now trying to figure all this out haha

and what are the differences between micro and macro lenses? it only shows micro lenses on the nikon website?

Micro is Nikons way of saying macro.

The 105 is nice as it has the VR, however when I was looking at macro lenses I found the 105mm to be not quite enough. I bought the Sigma 150mm and I'm very happy with it, I just wish it had the VR.

You'll want an Auto Focus lens, that way you can do both.

In addition to filters you can screw single macro lenses on the end of lenses but they don't work that well.

this is the best lens you can get for macro for the D80:
Nikon 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor Close-up Lens

Thanks , have any macro pics sphelps???

Whats VR?

VR stands for vibrartion reduction I believe. It means the lens has motors installed internally which counter act your camera shake. Basically you can take a slower hand held shot.

I picked up a sigma 28-80mm D F/3.5-5.6 II auto focus macro for my d70. I'm sure there's better out there, but does the trick and didn't break the bank.

Great pics sphelps!

While the Nikkor 105/2.8 is sweet, it's also ~$700. The Sigma version gets good reviews and photos too, and is roughly half the cost. I'm trying to decide between it and the 150/2.8.

Anyone have both(Sigma glass that is) and care to comment?

I have the 28-80mm and the 105mm. The 105 is great, but top down you're very restricted due to the proximity.

The Tamron is a nice sharp lens. It's only real drawback is the fact that it extends, quite a bit, while focussing. Many folks find that to be a hassle.

Yeah I keep forgetting about it when I shoot and sometimes I bump the glass
