well he was on the rock and wasnt looking good. so i moved him to the sand with medium flow. still didnt look good. so i fed him overnight and put a clear plastic cup ontop of it so my dwarf eel wouldnt steal the food. when i woke up he looked gret but didnt eat the mysis. so i figured he just needed low flow since he wasnt getting any inside the cup. so i move him to a low flow area and now he is back to his old, not looking good ways. What the H*** is going on and what do i do?!!!!!!

How long have you had it, what kind of coral is it (Genus, species)?
Most of the time brains will look bad for a couple of days before/after a WC and pop right back to their usual selves.
But if it's a new addition it is probably still acclimating and may be withdrawn for a few days.
A WC always helps--if done properly. Flow shouldn't matter very much, unless it's directly in front of a Tunze 6200.

I have had it for about 2 months. its latin name is Trachyphyllia geoffroyi if that helps. ill try to do a water change and see if that helps at all. but why would it be perfectly fine in a plastic cup? nothing ever goes close to nipping at it. idk what else to do about this thing.

WC is Water Change. OK, a Trachyphyllia geoffroyi, that helps alot--I hope.
Since you've had it for 2 months already, it should recover. I would do what you've done, low flow, try to feed--with pumps off, and see if it recovers.
Have you done a WC recently? My Trach. radiata always responds to a WC pos/neg--usually positively.

You need to be patient. You're moving this animal all over the tank, on the reef then off the reef, hi flow then low flow...it's most likely stressing. The cup on top overnight won't do a thing to it.

Keep it on the bottom of the tank in a low to medium flow area with some light.

It may take more the a few nights before the feeding behavior really kicks in.

Also, did you mince up the mysis? I like feeding finely chopped mysis, crushed pellets and cyclopeez all mixed up with some tank water.

Oh, one more thing; these corals like Iodine and Iodide so a product like Lugol's is great for it.

Trachyphyllia geoffroyi....also called a Open Brain or just Brain Coral.

This brain seems to do best with medium water flow, moderate lighting. Also lower placement in the tank, on the bottom on the sand seems to work the best.

Also what salt are you using ? They need supplements like
Calcium and other Trace elements

IMO....stop moving it. Your not giving it time to get acclimated to the tank & the area its in. Put it lower in the tank & leave it. However You should spot feed it every few days..........GOOD LUCK

Please post some pictures for us to see. Pictures always help us to see whats going on.

this is from when it was on the rock. it still looks like this on the sand too

What salt are you using ? You need a salt for Reef tanks.

The corals need calcium as well as other trace eliments. Are you using anything like Reef Solution ?

Light can make them close up.Red morphs can be more sensitive to too much light. Stop moving it around pick a partially shadd spot with low flow and leave it alone, Watch your fish. You may have a nipper.
