is this fish a good reef fish does it pick at inverts, i cant really find much info on it and was wondering if someone can help me out

It's a secretive fish.

Extremely peaceful with the exception of congeners.

I have never seen one pick at motile inverts, but I suppose a full grown one could possibly eat a sexy shrimp, but I wouldnt think that is likely.

They are completely coral safe.

The Swales Swissguard Basslet, (Pacific Candy Basslet), is a beautiful addition although not with as vivid coloration as the Candy Basslet.

An excellent reef-dwelling fish, the Swales Swissguard Basslet may only pose a threat to smaller, ornamental crustaceans such as sexy shrimp. They are somewhat reclusive, especially in the beginning.

As a carnivore, they will thrive on a diet of meaty foods such as finely chopped fresh or frozen marine fish, squid, mysis shrimp, vitamin-enriched brine shrimp, and frozen carnivore preparations. Ideally, they should be fed at least twice a day.

I have been considering one of these, but two things have held me back. One, although I have a big tank, my resident Splendid Dottyback is a grump and I'd worry about the Swales. Two, and related, I do have a pretty aggressive with the aforementioned Dottyback, a trio of Bartletts and a bunch of Tangs. Not ideal for a reclusive fish.

The dottyback is likely to be a problem but the tangs or anthias will never pay it any attention.

They are certainly the "poor person's" Candy Liopropma sp. I've passed on a couple beautiful ones for nice prices, and now wish I hadn't. I lost one in an outage while away years ago. They are a twilight fish, active during the actinic cycle, which I have on a lot.

Has anyone paired Liopropoma sp. or know their sexual cycle?

There is a lady with a pair on the Reef Fish forum. I have a single candy basslet.

I have one in my 75 gallon.. only ventures from the rocks during feeding time but seen often.. swims all through rocks and very peaceful nice addition... was very shy for first couple weeks but now seen always.. just moves in rock work.. does move around more once the moon lights are on...

I have the swales in my 205 and it is a great little fish for the tank. Spends most of his time zooming around the rocks and coming out to get food when there is some present in the tank. He chases no one, and no one chases him. I have never seen him go after an invert. Had him a few years now.

Keep an eye on DD for a candy basslet, they show up there every now and again and are probably your best bet. I got mine special order through my LFS (He resides in a seperate tank)

use a fish hook for the dotty. I know alot of people catch damsels and sixlines and other dottys that way. Get a small hook and line and file off the barb.

The dottyback is likely to be a problem.

Even in a 265, do you think? Was thinking I might try to add a Chalk Basslet just to see what happens before trying a more expensive fish like a Swales. Am I asking for trouble? Probably :)

Yeah, I caught the bully-of-all-bullies, a large three-stripe damsel, years ago with a hook, but then couldn't get it out and the fish died. I felt awful and have never tried the hook again! Guess I should have filed off the barb as you suggest.
