What do you find interesting about reefing?

Of course I love the fish and corals, but for me it's all the different things that show up unannounced. Wether it's feather dusters, sponges, some type of worm. It amazes me how you can start with everything dry and boom once you add water there it is. I guess jurassic park said it best, life will find a way.

I feel the same way, just add water & poof life! Thats how I got hooked many years ago we only reefed with live rock. The cycle with live rock is just as fascinating as the established reef!

For me it's humbling to see just how different everything is and is a lesson in how little we understand in our world.

Everything. Setting up a new system,l the different type of filteration and nutrient control, all the different types of lighting, in tank water flow power heads so many choices here fome Tunze, Vortex, Grye, how the hobby has evolved over the years blows me away, watching a reef tank grow from frags in to a full coral reef display. I love all these thing about the hobby but mostly I live the corals. Im all about the corals mostly sps.

The magic when you get everything just right. This is a very challenging hobby in so many ways that when I can get it right and the corals and fish are healthy and growing I get a good sense of accomplishment. It's a hobby where you are always learning and growing.

It's hard. I like/obsess over difficult things and get bored easily when success comes easy. I play all video games on the 'hard' setting because if I finish them on 'easy' I feel like I cheated :lolspin:

I'm also fascinated by coral as animals. They blow my mind no matter how much I read about them. We really know so little, but what we do know sets them apart from all all other life on the planet as unique.

I love setting up a new tank. So exciting and all the gear. But mainly reefs blow my mind. The sheer vastness of them and how so many animals live there. It is insane to have one fish in your tank and then see dozens together on the reef.

I used to work at a fish store and this guy described it as a sudoku, so that kick started it.

After that it was the beautiful colors and the symbiotic relationships that can coexist. Like the pistol and watchman, anemones and clownfish and anemone shrimp.

But over all it's just an extremely satisfying hobby.

Right now, as a beginner, I am constantly mystified by the fact corals seem like emotional, often violent and very willful animals. I thought they would be more plant like. The fish, on the other hand, are much more charming and curious about me than I remember fresh water fish — more like our pond goldfish which great me and beg. My salt fish also beg and on Sunday when we came home late so no lunch, they seemed down right angry with us.

Well this is exactly how I fell 30 some years ago about my first reef. But after 4-5 difference reef tank set up. Now is all about how to make that sps corals looking better and better. I do miss look at the tank in the dark with flash light to see what creature I can find coming out of the rocks and caves
