i have been keeping it at around 475 or so is that really to high i have heard some people keep it almost 500 which i thought would be too high what can happen if you keep it too high or too low 400 or lower? if you keep an all sps tank.

You should keep it in balance with your alk. WHats your alk?

Edit: I just checked the reef calc and it seems the balanced alk would be 15dkh, yikes!

As long as my Ca is above 400 I don't really care. Ca is a limiting mineral. In other words, high calcium does not translate to high grown. However when it drops below a certain level it can inhibit growth and actually leach from the corals back into the water. I believe the threshold is somewhere around 360-380.

Alk on the other hand can influence growth rates to a point. In other words jacking the alk too high doesn't benefit and can be detrimental. I try to keep mine around 9.5-10.0

450/9 dkh. Is there a ratio of calcium to alkalinity? I'd like to know what it is and does magnesium have anything to do with it?

I keep mine at 460/12 I purposely run my alk a little high because I use reef crystals and do large(er) water changes and I prefer not to knock my system out of whack every time I change water with RC which is around 13 dkh.

yeah i keep my alk at 9 calc.475

I have my tank at 450 Ca and Alk at 12. I also use RC salt and have 20% WC every two weeks. I don't understand why this salt comes with such a high Alk of about 13 to 14.:bounce2: I wish it was around 10.
