What do you think about the World Aquarium(at City Museum in downtown STL)?

??? I've never been. Whenever I go to the City Museum I never get around to it.

I long for Saint Louis to have a public aquarium like Shedd in Chicago and not just the exhibit in the City Museum.

Well, at least the penguins are back at the zoo.

I haven't been there for years but when I was there last it was awful . . . embarrassingly awful.

From what I understand the aquarium leases that space from the museum and the museum is in the process of evicting them.

Or Shedd's or the Georgia, even the one in Chattanooga.

I've never been to these public aquariums, but have heard good things about them.

I think the difference between World Aquarium and the others is that the majority of the others are publically funded.

No. The difference between those and the world aquarium is like the difference between the St. Louis zoo and a petting zoo at a backwoods traveling circus.

Your words ring true, you'll find no argument from me.

However, is the world aquarium (which is an insult to the world and all for which it spins) publically or privately funded?

I think why Shedd is so successful is they have a lot of pledges and have more members than any public institution in Chicago(an impress feat considering all the amazing public institutions there.)

But Shedd came about because of their World Fair, St. Louis had a world fair that STL Zoo was pretty much established on. Yet no aquarium. The aquarium exhibit was just dumped. St. Louis had more people and more money than Chicago back in 1904. It could have been done! But while Shedd is an older aquarium that has grown, Georgia Aquarium(largest in America) is new! Why did Atlanta get it? They had a really rich guy(Home Depot tycoon) give $250m and then some other companies donated some millions. STL- we need to find our really rich person to fund our aquarium. =( There are a lot of companies headquartered in STL, surely someone is out there who is good for the money. Surely?

Wanted: Really rich person to fund STL Aquarium

Fine. I will do it. Just give me the winning lottery numbers for Tonight and I will grant several million to the construction of a top notch aquarium for the STL.

I think the wealthiest person around the area is Jack Taylor. 13B or something like that. Next time he shows up at the office I will talk to him about it.

It seems they have reopened at Laclede's landing and are having an event over the holiday weekend. Hopefully they take better care of their animals at the new location.
