What do you think will be the next breakthrough in reef keeping?

There is very little reason that the equipment can't be mass produced at a much lower price point..

Except for that whole profit margin thing. As we all know companies are greedy and its all about the dollar, not about producing products that everyone can afford.

Captive bred corals. Not fragmented coral, but corals that have sexually reproduced in captivity, which will certainly lead to new hybrid strains of the latest and greatest.

I wouldn't say that at all.
Most companies (I'm speaking largely to what I know which is US businesses) charge what they change because they want to ensure they turn sufficient profit for numerous reasons..
1-To not treat their employees like slaves with only enough pay to barely allow them to eat and allow them to enjoy decent lives.
2-The want those employees to have sufficient healthcare. (that can be one of the highest expenses on a companies books actually even though employees pay some many companies pay far more)
3-They want/need to meet stringent safety/environmental,etc... standards and compliance so that people aren't hurt/killed and that our environment isn't trashed.
4-They want to ensure that they are making money so that they can continue to grow the company/invest in new technology to improve the processes as well as be able to make it through seasonal downturns in the economy.
5-recoup R&D and capitol investments in a suitable time frame necessary to continue with routine development cycles..
6-Pay tariffs allowing international business,etc...

and many..many more things that are all part of the reason for the profit margins that most employees/individuals fail to understand..
;)

Things I hope for:

Automatic testing (on the horizon but not yet here)
Further out auto triton type testing to know trace elements and such in tank

Robotic berghia to destroy aiptasia (think mini robot slug with laser!!!)

Robotic glass cleaner that can do the corners of tank and move from panel to panel

better integration amongst pumps. Think common communication for modes and such so you could swap various brands together if needed. Similar to how PC is a hodge podge of parts but all operate in one ecosystem

Better wifi control/linking of devices

Power eficiency in more devices

Underwater drill like a dremel so we could more easily cut larger frags

Honestly the thing I would most like at the moment would be for my AWC. I would like a device that upon hitting a certain level in my mixing barrell would stop my AWC (Dos in this case), refill the barrell with RODI to a preset point, add salt, mix, and then test the salinity to ensure it is at my set level of 1.026. I would just feed a hopper with 2 bags of salt or such and it would do the rest for me.

reagentless test kits.. i want to stick in a probe like salinity and readings like calcium and alk every second like salinity.

How about a reliable DC pump that actually can handle some head pressure and won't cost me an arm and a leg?

One thing I want to see is a genetic testing service that can determine what kind of microorganisms are present in your tank.

Like similar to triton testing, but in this case you sent a water sample and they analyze the DNA and RNA sequences in that. They will report you back which genetic markers from which organisms they encountered. It would be a nice tool to see, say of ich is still present, or if you have uronema, or some type of coral pathogenic bacteria or virus. Same way it can give info about beneficial bacteria. Maybe there are some key microorganisms for success in reef keeping.

The tech is already there. People has been taking water from the ocean and doing this analysis for research purposes. We just need someone doing this at commercial scale. And we need genetic markers or sequenced genomes of more marine microorganisms (like I dont know if we have genomic seq of Cryptocaryon irritans).

This on a grander scale. A monitor for alk, cal, mag and salinity. Just look at the screen and see what the tank prams are at anytime without testing. Push a button and see how much is used up per day and what you need to dose. Even better, have it continually adjust dosing pumps to meet the tank needs.

This..

I want.to be able to look at a screen and see on the fly and daily historical information on tank parameters.

Then when I add in chemicals see strait up if I added enough etc.

probe for calcium, mag and alk. heaters that are more dependable and a way to automate mixing your salt into your RO until it gets to a preset number that you want

With all the current moves to limit the exporting of live stock in more and more places. Hopefully we will have some huge advances in aquaculture so we will still have access to the variety of marine life that we currently do.

As far as advancements in equipment. Most of the newest equipment that has come has just been for the manufactures to make money, not many have actually made the hobby better.

Someone let me know when that (pipe dream, mentioned earlier) Chinese mass-spec hits the market, for pennies on the dollar. Even at one penny on the dollar, you'll need to shell out quite a lot. ...Consumables and training will probably cost you more.

I think you forgot that they need to pay for their million dollar home mortgage and luxury car payments.

I think you forgot that they need to pay for their million dollar home mortgage and luxury car payments.

And if they can do all of what I wrote above and still get million dollar homes and luxury car payments more power to them..
I have zero problems with that and my only complaint is that I'm not in their shoes..

maybe, but usually at that point, a bad CEO will think of reducing cost by sending production to china, because he don't want to get fired by the board, so he will fire the hard working employee. He will save pension plan and benefits by sub contracting and hiring self employed sellers. and everybody will hate him, even his family, and he will die alone and depressed... :)
