I am setting up the 180 and right now I am going to start out Fish only with live rock , but slowly upgrade lights and stuff as I can afford it.

I am thinking going bare bottom with a remote DSB or maybe just putting in a DSB in the display.

What do you think?

WWJD

what would John do ??

no offense Jesus...

How about thin sand bed in display with rdsb? Sand looks so nice in the tank and if you go bb it will limit your fish options. Some fish like having sand.

If you go barebottom no jawfish or goby/pistol shrimps. What kind of fish are wanting to keep?

SSB kept clean by regular twice weekly stirring. Mechanical filtration via frequently changed filter socks and aggressive protein skimming. Carbon source dosing for additional bio-mechanical removal of dissolved nutrients. Continuous chemical filtration with high quality granular activated carbon that is replaced every two weeks to maintain water clarity and limit excreted warfare compounds from the tank’s inhabitants.

I will be re-doing my main tank eventually which is my Zoa dominat tank. I will be going BB with a TON of flow. I'm so sick of sand getting in and covering stuff. I will miss my Wrasses very much, but I think in the long run, the BB is way better.

I'll clean out the guest bedroom in my tank in case those wrasses need a good home.

Get a GSM Clown, when they get big enough it is pretty close to the same effect.

Always liked the look of a clean sand bed, the shaping of the sand, the way sand piles and helps to cove out areas under the rocks etc.. I seem to hear the same ol' things from people with BB on fighting nitrate and such, not sure I'm really sold on BB helping with tank waste isuses for the sake of loosing the realism look sand provides.

My low to no nitrate tanks have been my BB tanks. Plus I have had issues with cyano in every sand tank I ever had.

No cyano in my BB tanks.

I agree though. Tanks "look" way better with a sand bottom. I personally have had too many negative issue with them. Maybe if I had a DSB tank with 6"+ of sand, it may be different.

My nitrates have always been undectable on my SSB using Lamotte test kit and I have never had an issue. Change socks frequently and skim heavily.

I have had some small amount of cyano a couple of times but as long as I run GFO it has taken care of it so it has never been an issue.

very shallow sand bed around rocks? Put egg crate underneath the rocks and sand, it will keep the shallow sand from drifting too much. BB looks like a frag tank unless covered with corals and rocks.

Cyano? Are you using RO DI and aragonite? I used to have cyano and once I have those two in place with good flow and a power skimmer, I had no problems.

Nice LOGO.
