Hello all.

so this is a question Ive been having for a while, since we cant use soap, what do you use to wash ure hand with ?

most ppl use just water. but that doesnt get the oil off of ure hands, so now I dip my hand in vineager, then rinse with water and then put it in aquarium,
same with other stuff I put in there.

anyone does anything more convenient than this ? I'm kinda tired of puring vineager over my hand everyday lol

I wash my hands with soap. Then wait for awhile if I have to go back into the tank, but I will wash my hands with water quite a few times before sticking them back in.

Usually, I know there's nothing contaminating my hands and just stick them right in the tank.

I use non scented hand soap and rinse well. I don't trust the scented kinds or dish soap to fully wash away.

Pick up one of those long grabbers. I absolutely love mine for picking up knock over corals etc... I even target feed some animals with them.

most of the time there is nothing i will worry about unless it is a solvent, harsh chemical , organic or soap itself. in those cases i avoid sticking my hands in. if there is any of those i avoid it. soap is bad for the fish, solvents are bad for chemistry and fish, organics can be bad for both and coral. by organics i mean if i just ate a chicken with my fingers.

No way I would rinse my hands in vinegar every day. Been using regular soft soap for many, many years. rinse well and in the tank they go.

okay thanks guys, so I guess I was just being to strict about it, as many of you said you wash your hand with soap and then rinse very well and then put in the tank.

doesnt matter how clean our hands are, there still is a film of oil on it, so yea best option is to NOT put hands in it, but when I feed my seahorses, I need to put a dish in there, to put the food in that dish, and then remove the dish, so have to wash my hand and that dish nightly. guess I'll use just a bit of soap and rinse ALOT.

thanks again

Well, you could remove that film, but then I don't think you'd have any skin left lol.

I completely understand the concern about the soap though, none of us wants to have something happen that was 100% avoidable.

I will wash my hands for about 1-2 hours before I put them in the tank after using soap. Er, let me clarify: I will wash my hands a few times while waiting 1-2 hours before putting them back in :)

I use Irish Spring soap every time right before I stick my hands in the tank or on anything that goes in the tank. I just make sure to rinse very very well and to dry my hands completely off even if I am going right into the tank. 15 years of doing this with no ill effects.

I use the soap that doesn't get added with lotion like bath and body works have. Just like ivory or something and I make sure all the residue is washed off before I touch the tank.

I think it's Ivory that washes away very nicely (you never get that soapy feeling afterwards). If I was concerned about it....That would probably be the way I would go.

thanks again :) great advices :)

my hands and my GF thank you guys as well, they were tired and had enough of vineager dip LOL

Anything you can wipe your hand and arm with that will keep your skimmer foam from collapsing when you stick your hand in the tank? You know, from the oils on your skin, I guess.

At work we use a product called Liquinox to clean environmental sampling equipment. It is phosphate free and residue free and I think it is biodegradable too. I never thought about it for reefing until this thread but I bet it would be a good soap to use.
