What does a cyanide caught fish do??

I recently bought a naso tang from saltwaterfish.com and was fine for 2 weeks, its warranty, then turned black and died in 1 day. It seemed healthy and was eating ok. Some one said cyanide caught fish from the phillipines do this.

Thats a shame, cyanide caught fish , are well posioned so they nock out a large area of fish n go ppick them up, dont think thats good for anything

Cyanide caught fish dont live as long and can have more of a disease problem than normal caught fish.

It is almost like being in radiation but for a fish.

From what I've been given to understand, the cyanide eventually effects the liver of the fish. This will cause the fish to stop taking foods and the liver is unable to process anything and so toxins overtake the fish an kill it.

They will appear fine for upto a couple months even. Then will start to fad, stop eating and die off.

I just had a percula do almost the exact same thing. I had him about a week and he was doing great, then all of a sudden he acted like he was poisoned and died 3 days later, everything else was healthy and I am pretty sure it was cyanide. Now I am getting a tank raised pair from Dr. Mac tommorrow.

Though fishing with cyanide can lead to long term sequelae & similar death, you can't assume that just because the fish turned black that this was the reason or even the method of capture. For example, an ammonia spike can do the same thing. If the fish died on the second day, you should contact the online vendor, saltwaterfish.com. Most have a stay alive guarantee within a certain period of time if you acclimated properly.

supposedly alot of guys that catch the fish shoot cyanide into the cracks of the reefs, this paralyzes the fish, and makes it easy to collect them. I am really good friends with the owner of a LFS here in Eugene, and he told me that if the fish are collected with cyanide that they will be dead in 2-4 weeks, and it will happen suddenly. The cyanide does go into the liver and it kills them deader then a doornail. I only will buy MAC certified fish, they cost more but are gaurenteed not by caught with chemicals or anything else like that.

Just curious, teguc, but how do you know if it's MAC certified?

Fish that are caught with Cyanide live for more than several weeks. Not all fish show any reaction to being caught with Cyanide...but many do. The ones that do can have a range of side-effects that range from liver damage to immune system issues. For liver damage, it may take 3 months to a year before the fish dies from toxins that the liver cannot process...but with immune system issues, it depends on the diseases the fish are exposed to.

Personally, the tangs death does not seem to be the smoking gun towards Cyanide poisoning in my opinion. It sounds to me like the tang was stressed by an external variable.
