What Euphyllia is this?

I am new to the hobby and while I have Borneman's aq. corals book, I cannot ID this Euphyllia. The person I got it from said it could be some kind of hybrid parancora/paradivisa hybrid sincce it has polyps that look like both hammers and frogspawn but another person thought it could be cristata.

What do you all think?

I would tend to say torch, although the slight broadening of tips could say hammer.

I thought that torches usually did not have the multiple polyps on a stalk? There aren't many multiples in the colony but it is unusual.

I don't think it fits any of the three common names for Euphyllia species. I think there are more than 3 types of strains but we tend to group them in those three categories. I have agreen "Torch" that has a few tentacles with branches but I still call it a torch. What matters is if you like it and that the care level is pretty much the same as all Euphyllia.

My torch has some polyps with branches, but it has much more rounded tips than this Euphyllia. I can't ID it, but this is a neat coral -- enjoy it!

torch corals tend to have long tentacles that flow. This coral looks like a hammer with flatter tips. I think people call this an anchor coral but it could be a funky species of frogspawn but not a torch.

Ancora "anchor coral" is generally what non-branching or "wall" hammers are referred to as. I have been seeing more and more corals like your pic coming in from indonesia. Most are sold as branching hammers, but they have the few extra extensions here and there like a frogspawn. Definitely not a torch though.

It would probably be listed as an ultra mega rare one of a kind euphyllia if it was sold on ebay. :D

i have two of those and the guy i got them from called it a torch coral

i got another torch today and it has smaller tentacals. alot smaller and thinner. it may be a hybrid
( i also have a frogspawn that kinda looks like a torch lol)

who did you get that from.. it looks exactly like mine

Here is what a typical torch coral looks like. Much thinner and longer, with generally only one tip per 'tentacle'.

If anyone who thinks its a hammer has any pics of theirs that have this same kind of tips I'd love to see them. All the hammers that I have seen have the traditional anchor shape while my coral has a few tips that have almost the same shape but they are few and far between. Most of them are round or ovoid and the frogspawn-like tentacles at some of the bases throw me.

I think I will see if Mr. Borneman can shed some light on it. Thanks for your opinions though. Whatever it is, I certainly like it!

Ya, I'd call it a Hammer coral. The ones I have seen coming in with the extra extensions have all been called Hammer. Until it is specifically classified as something else, I call them Hammers when I get them.

Frogspawn generally have longer tentacles than hammer. Yours looks short and fat like Hammer.

If you dont like any of the above, just call it a cool euphyllia morph. :)
