Most people have never heard of them before, there are also a couple other lenses in different focal lengths made the exact same way by Canon. Consider them a "Canon experiment" - basically an AF only lens with their own built in motor. They flopped...BADLY, slow, noisy. There have been other lenses occasionally introduced trying to follow the same design concept but they've never succeeded.
