What fish is the least likly to go carpet surfying?

Most fish will not go carpet surfing as long as they are not being harrased or are being kept in an unhealthy tank. Wrasses, tilefish, and jawfish are more prone than others.

The only time I've seen my ocellaris even attempt jumping is when I was intentionally trying to catch them to move the tank. If they get scared they hide in the bottom of the tank, not near the top. I don't know if a light diffuser top is possible with your setup but it gives me some peace of mind.

Despite everones assurance that some fish (namely clowns) will not jump, my male Perc Clown loves to carpet surf. To be honest, I haven't seen a fish who won't at one time or another that is any fun to watch in a tank...
Day 1 - Straight out the front of the tank onto hardwood. Pure luck I saw him.
Day 2 - Out back of tank to fuge....rescured him from protein skimmer pump.
Day 3 - Went to home depot and bought 8 dollar lighting grate and now I can have any fish I want...even ones that "don't jump" like clowns.

Save yourself a ton of money and get one of those flourescent grated lighting diffusers, cut it to shape and use a lid.

Just my 2 cents

Got any pics of how that lid looks like?

I have to agree with the eggcrate. My tank is partially open & my female ocellaris chased her partner right out of the tank. Way too late by the time I found him. Frankly, had I known how hostile they can be with their own kind, I might have only gotten one to start with..

Here are some pic shots of the tank lid as well as it sitting on the tank. This is a rimless tank so I'll spray paint this a reflective silver when I have time but it is quite functional for now. Total cost 8 dollars and 10 minutes with my dremil to shape it.
