What are you planning on bringing to the January frag swap? (Frag swap times, locations etc will be posted to the January meeting thread- this thread is for frag related stuff only).
:D

I will bring a frag of a finger leather, pink pulsing xenia (not the red kind) some zoos maybe, some yellow polyps maybe and green star poylps. Nothing real exciting, frags for beginners...at least these are what I started out with and it all worked out.

Do we have to have frags to trade to go? I would be interested in attending but none of my corals have grown out enough to frag yet so I would have to buy.

evry frag swap that I've been to has been a mostly cash event...
those that really need the frags usually don't have the tank set up to "trade"

Megan, I would love some pulsing zenia. Also, I can frag my finger leather, galaxia, and star coral. I make have a branch of my red digi, someone usually breaks one off. I'm also going to clip lots of mushrooms. I dont' know how they will do. Mitz

I have a green kenya tree frag that is looking good on day two. Should be a nice frag by January. I'll also have a few mushrooms and zoos to bring with with me. I also have a medium sized tree coral that I am going to bring as well. I think that's it.

I think we should swap first and then auction off what's leftover. Do we know yet if anyone from BRS is going to come?

Dave

Mitzi, I will gladly trade you some shrooms for some xenia.
I have the pink pom pom ones and also the red sea kind. You can have a frag of both it you like.

ICY1115, There is not reason why one cannot go if they do not have frags to trade or want to purchase... this is also a socail event and montly gathering of like minded reefers!

Feel free to attend regardless ;)

Wow, that's a good question.

My personal opinion would be that most of the point of swapping frags is to defray the cost of the corals among friends.

I have no problem with people charging for frags if the person who wants it has nothing to trade. I would just beseech folks to be kind when charging other club members- like hopefully a good chunk below retail.

I do think two at least from BRS are coming, wouldn;t surprise me at all if it turns out to be more- especially if I go post it on the BRS website. Great group of folks there.

There is a problem here(tiny one)...
by inviting BRS members (and I'm a member as well), they plan on charging for frags and making money(who wouldn't). Everybody(including them) is open to swapping/trading, but only people who have and serious love of the hobby would drive 2-3 hours to trade.
And I'm sure they would be open to trading, but, honestly, I don't think most of us have stuff they would be willing to trade for, maybe a little here and there. They plan on making money, and they should- they will probably have a great selection of frags, BUT, by doing this it detracts from internal trading from within the club, and the only people who make any money promptly drive home out of the state. From reading the other thread, it sounds like there actually could be the makings of a true swap, but not this. Just seems lopsided, and doesn't seem to do the most amount of "good" for the club. Sure the club gets some sort of tax paid from each frag sold, and more frags will be sold with BRS members there, but that's it.

Off the top of my head this is what I could bring if there is some interest.

1. 2”h x 2”w Tangerine Millipora Acropora. Encrusted on a coraline covered, flat LR approx 3” x 3 “. Ready to frag. Fantastic growth rate.
2. 1”h Lime Green Acropora with dark green polyps. Base is encrusted and has spread approx 2” in diameter and showing multi growth points. Mounted on a 2 ½ x3 ½ coralline covered LR(flat).
3. (5) Montiora Digitata pink polyp frags 1-2” h encrusted on LR rubble.
4. Lots of Pulsating Xenia.
5. 10+ ORA bright orange stag acropora frags . Up to 4”H attached to frag disks.
6. Maiden’s hair macro algae if anyone has interest.
7. Unknown anemones. (3 or 4) have been very reef friendly, don’t wander and max out @ about 3” before splitting. Yellow bases, pink tentacles w/green tips.
8. Various Zoo’s
9. various reef friendly hermits & Hawaiian Snake Head Cowry snails.

I might think of others if I really put my mind to it! :)

I think you have a good point. :D

SWAM will not be setting prices- that is up to the sellers and buyers. Having said that, I think the only thing that should be kept in mind is that if it is set too high, they might not find as many buyers...?

Folks are adults- I am not really all too worried about it. I think that the sellers and buyers will determine between themselves what is reasonable for each frag.

That is what I am counting on! In the end, at least for me, it isn't as much about the money I make from the frags as it is getting something cool I didn't have before and spending the day roadtripping to do something I am excited about.

BTW, I do not plan on charging a tax on each frag sold for this event. I'd rather have a donation jar... The locale is most likely going to be free, so I am not worried about recouping costs... Any money we make off donations will be used expressly for the club or the next speaker, after all.

I think a frag swap is a misnomer, at least it was while i was in the Boston area... I never swapped a frag of something for a frag of something else. A frag swap as I understand, understood it is a time and place for those who have items(frags and equipment) to sell or trade gather together.. Hence the swap part of the phrase... but if Swam only wants to trade.. that is ok I guess...
but I don't have enough to trade to make it worth my while to attend...

Again, I have no problem with folks buying and selling versus trading... :D

I was just hoping folk might be a little gentler on the coral frag pricing with other hobbyists. (Ie, I have no prob with folk making money- just don't rake anyone over the corals so to speak... LOL Especially because there will be no door charge or frag selling tax for BRS or SWAM club members!)

<grin>

If that's the case, why not have a true swap - no money.

To me, this doesn't help or promote SWAM members trading, and seems a little backward in trying to get this club a little more off the ground. This club needs to build enthusiasm from within the state, and get more sponsors(be they local or not, and I'm willing to help with this ) and a bigger club bank account. The club is shooting itself in the foot with this Jan meeting and the way it generates funds for the club.

I just don't see the BRS asking Manhattan Reefers or Long Island Reefers asking them to come up and sell their stuff. Actually, I think that action would peeve the membership greatly. The only people who should sell anything at a meeting outside of members, should be a sponsor. And if your not a sponsor or a member, you should pay to get in to any SWAM event, and that money goes to the club. And if you sell frags, a tax should be charged, with that going to the club.
I almost want to bet, that the club makes almost nothing for money, and the money that was made drives south out of the state, promptly.
I don't mean to focus on money, but more money means better meetings, better and more frequent speakers, a bigger message/presence to attract more members, and maybe some contests or prizes, all of which translates to a better SWAM. Maybe even one day to a forum that is SWAM's and not relying on RC or other boards to host.

This is just my opinion of what would be most beneficial for the club and it's members based on past meeting I have attended. I would start the meeting off with trades. Let everyone who brings frags to swap chat and work out their deals, this would give everyone a chance to look at all the frags and chat about them. Then we could hold an auction, similar to those in the past, with minimum bids set on the frags determined by the owner. This tends to keep prices lower because people just won't usually drive the prices up too high unless they really want something.

I think that there should be a small percentage taken by SWAM from each auction item since we are hosting the event. That is how auctions were done in the past. This would help pay for our domain and web hosting.

Naturebatslast: We actually have a website and forum all ready to go. We should be using it early 2007!
