What happen to $30 salt?? More the once in the past 2 years, I got RC the 200 box for $30 from Marinedepot or thatfishplace, what happened now that the prices on all salt went up?

Hah, $30 you say! I bought a 55g (yes, the small bucket!) RSCP the other day and it was $57! Be thankful you arent living on an island.

Are you sure you got Reef Crystals in a 200 gallon box for that price? You can buy Instant Ocean from several on-line vendors for about $35 for a 200 gallon box, but Reef Crystals is going to set you back $50 or so for the same size.

Interestingly, us old codgers remember that seasalt wasn't ever all that inexpensive. I found an old receipt the other day from 1992 that listed Instant Ocean for $11.95 for a 50 gallon bag. And it's still only about $14. Considering that's 21 years of inflation, seasalt has actually gotten considerably cheaper over the years.

I just ordered a box of Io from that pet place for under $40 a box. Thats the best deal I've seen in a long time. If your in the market order 3 and get free shipping (orders over 89 bucks).

Yeah I usually wait for a sale at Foster and Smith, use to be able to grab it for around $48. But the last few sales they have not discounted the 200 gal box.

Instant Ocean Sea Salt - 200 Gallon Pro Size box 3 @ $38.80 $116.40

They use to give free shipping too, but that deal may be done. I'm on my last box so it's time to look elsewhere.

they still give free shipping but when the salt goes on sale it puts the price just under the amount needed for the free shipping so you have to buy something else to make up for it. It's a good time to add some extra fish food :D

I posted this in another thread:

If you want to save some cash, buy a 200g box of instant ocean and a container of calcium chloride from Bulk Reef Supply. In a standard 32 gallon trash can, filled 4/5ths of the way full with water mixed to 1.026 sp. gr., approximately 1 level tablespoon of calcium chloride will raise the calcium concentration from 400 ppm to 450 ppm. Presto - Reef Crystals from Instant Ocean for about an extra 15 cents per 25 gallons.

Doing this will also lower the alkalinity somewhat - from about 12 dKH to about 9 dKH if the mix is allowed to circulate at room temperature for about 24 hours.

I'm with you!

I'm just wondering what other trace elements (i.e. strontium, iodide, etc.) are added to "reef grade" salt that may not be found in IO. Or at least in sufficient quantities.
