What have you done with your tank lately?

I finally got around to taking some pics today - my underwater camera has been acting up and doesn't want to focus very well. Even with it messing up though, I was able to get a few good pics in.
Other than these, just been working to clean up a little diatom break out and deciding what project I want to take on next with this little reef.

Purlpes are nice if you like the Zebrasoma shape. Tomini or Kole would be two others that are cool but understated.

For the magnet cleaner, look at the Tunze care magnet...they are awesome.

Personally, I have just always replaced my sand and seeded it with a bit of the old. If I were going to reuse it, I would rinse it well and prepare for a possible small cycle.

It is up to you. It has only been a week. Just remember that bacteria load has changed to anaerobic.(low oxygen) When you add it to your tank the bacteria will most likely crash so give it some time to re-cycle. Personally I would probably rinse the sand really good myself and then add it. Again you will greatly damage the bacteria population doing this so after you add it to the tank it will need to cycle. Remember sand is just sand. It does not go bad. It is all the micro-organisms and built up waste you have to worry about.

thanks for the info guys. Now I can put off cleaning it and adding it for another week :D
I will be getting a Kole' tang at some point, and maybe something a bit more rare.

In a 90 gallon tank, I'd lean more towards the Tomini Tang personally, they are the smallest of the Tangs. Purples, and Scopas are also about the same size and are Zebrasoma tangs. You could also do a Convict if you wanted to go with an Acantharus tang....but I would suggest no more than two tangs for your tank, 3 will be fighting.

Love the aquascape

120 has been cleaned out and aquascaped.

Tested parameters on the failed science project, (FSP) looking system.

Fed the fish in FSP system and in QT.

New PH probes and RO/Di filters and membrane were delivered today.

Still on the agenda is disconnect the 75 gallon sump from the FSP system, hook up a smaller 20 gallon sump in its place, and clean it out for use with the 120.

Once that happens, I can begin to cycle the 120 and get it going again, and eventually tear down the FSP system.

All this talk of the failed science project... I feel like I'm being baited. I don't wanna look, but I feel a strange need to (kind if like driving past a car wreck). [emoji1]

One of my favs. I have a good sized male in the tank now.

Nice! have you ever had a male and female together? I'm betting they would be really cool to watch. I'm thinking of getting a flasher wrasse pair too, but I might have already messed up the last fish in order :p

No, I've never had a pair together. FWIW my male is really well behaved and hasn't minded a bit when I add new fish to the tank.

Love the aquascape

Thanks! Hopefully I can do it justice....

Ahhh....okay. Wasnt baiting you or anyone else, but I can see how it might look like that.

No pictures, sorry.

The 120 I posted a picture of previously was originally set up in 2007. Search "Project 150" for details if you're interested.

The previous set up was built with keeping an H.magnifica anemone and some SPS and clams. Along the way, I acquired more H.magnifica anemones and an H.crispa anemone. I started out with a single H.magnifica and centered it in the reef. When I stumbled on another a few years later, I set up a 58 gallon tank for it (no room in the 120 due to aquascaping), and plumbed it into the 120's sump.

Then a few years later I stumbled into Daniel/TwiggyB's larger H.magifica needing a new home and set up a 40 breeder above the 58 and plumbed it into the 58 and thus into the 120's sump.

None of this was done particularly well and maintenance and accessibility has become an issue.

The intent with this set up is to streamline the system and house all three H.magnifica anemones in the 120, separated on the far ends of the tank with a pair of Rod's Onyx Percs and a pair of Darwin Black Ocellaris clowns keeping the rest of the fish in the tank away from the anemones.

I'm planning on getting some anthias (3-4 Bicolor's which are supposed to be the easiest of anthias to keep), as open water swimmers to keep the clowns in their anemones and not screaming across the tank trying to kill each other.

We'll see how this plan works out....I may be creating a whole new science project just waiting to fail....

You were just who I was thinking about with regards to anthias....

Live Aquaria states that Bicolors are easy to keep and so are ignitus.....I could swear I read somewhere else that Bicolor's were among the easiest to keep....but you've got alot more anthias experience than anyone else I know.

How many lyretails do you have currently?

My original harem of 12 is down to one, but it's been 8 years and they died of old age. I've been meaning to get another dozen or so, but just haven't pulled the trigger yet. Bicolor are beautiful, but finicky. Griss had some for a year or two before they died out. Square Spot are super easy but get large.

How many square spots do you think I could realistically keep in a 120?

ETA - Which anthias do you feel is best for someone new to anthias, Lyre Tails or Square Spots?

A male and three females would almost be cramped at full size. Lyre tail are probably the hardiest overall, followed by Square Spot, IME.

Henry has two great articles on these fish here:

added my carbon reactor and all the SPS in the tank really perked up. I cleaned the glass and cut tops for the tank, they fit like a glove. I also mounted my probes in a better place, mounted the ATO level in a stable place, and added kalkwasser to the ATO.

I adjusted the lights to peak earlier and run just a bit longer.
I had a great chicken sandwich, homemade chips and ice cream. was a good day.
