As the colors of these corals are so gorgeous. I could never drop a pretty penny down on these Scoly's. The only one's I would spend lots on are some nice trachy's and well's.

$$$$$$$$$

$$$$$$$$$

No matter where I look they cost a small fortune. I myself think they look just like brains, just not that attractive.

some of these corals come from Australia.
The exporters charge rip off prices , but the importers in the USA are prepared to pay, so hence the high price. You can buy many of these corals in Australian retail stores for a 1/4 of the price as hobbyist in Australia will not pay the high dollars for them.

That's not always true. There's a store in Queensland that charges $4-600 for similar scolymias. On the other hand, they can't get $100 for even the nicest of chalice colonies. It's all about supply and demand, but even in Australia the prices can get pretty insane.

I'm a HUGE fan of ultra scolymias, but for some reason the one pictured above doesn't strike my interest. This has, is, and will always be my favorite!

Whenever I see these super colored scolies, the negative part of me says "DYE-JOB" LOL...I know it's not always the case but I'm often skeptical.

Can't bring myself to pay the premium on one of these things. You see a bleeding apple scoly in almost any reef shop you walk into or on any reef website. In no way are these things rare, but $250 is the least you will pay usually. Mix in a not so common color and forget about it... Maybe it's just me, but I'm always on the lookout for something unique. Make no mistake, that can cost some $$$, but I've gotten several really nice, unique pieces for less than what the usual common scoly goes for. it's weird for sure, but like Cali said, that's just the way the market is with these things so far. It was the same with acans for the longest time.

I don't think dye job, I think photoshop job. They're nice, and if I was loaded I'd think about them, but they're way too expensive for me.

It's all about supply and demand

Supply and demand, and - sadly - VASTLY hyped fads based on nearly insignificant differences in coloration, and/or internet bragging rights.

6 or 7 years ago, I bought a scoly similar to the first one in this thread for my 125. Really pale blue on a mostly red background. Maybe 4" across. I think I paid like $50 for it at TRS or something. I remember they had a bunch of similar corals, all in the $40 - $80 price range. These days, you can't even touch the average-looking ones for under $100, because suddenly some "cool" ones appeared and now the entire market is through the roof. Of course, the fans will claim that there's no way possible the coral I had was anything like these new popular corals, because they've all been discovered on some little knoll no one collected from before, but to the non-fad-influenced eye, I don't see the difference.

Same thing with Chalices. I had an average-looking one in that tank, and no one would drive all the way out to my house in the boonies for frags, even if they were free. These days, little 1" slivers of similar corals are $50 - $100 and people can't buy them fast enough.

I guess I'm just venting because it ****es me off when a type of coral I like suddenly becomes popular, because the prices go through the roof for no reason and I can't justify buying them any more. :D I will not dispute that corals like the ones in this thread are beautiful, but I also think the prices are not justified.

the marketing drives me nuts also. stupid names and limited edition labels... gimme a break. they're just corals. at least with designer jeans you get a label on the waistband.
