What is the biggest expense?

I have room, time and lots of interest. Do they require any special lighting and can they be fed once daily? When they breed- is there a market for selling? Thanks, nancy

Nancy,
Take some of your time and read thru lots of these posts. The info you find will be very pertinent to a newbie seahorse owner.

To answer your questions...no, they don't require any special lighting....yes, they can be fed once daily, but most feed more often.....they are not guppies...IF they breed, raising the fry to a selling size is quite difficult and expensive.....most species are still not capable of being captive raised, and none easily. If you do get a species that are one of the easier to raise, say erectus, then yes, there is a market for them, if you can bear to watch some ignorant fool put your baby that you have taken so much time and effort to raise into a completely unsuitable tank where the anemone promptly eats it.

I saw in your other post the question about two pair in a 20g. IMO, that will be much too crowded. Consider this, if you are lucky enough to get babies, then you can figure at least one other tank for each batch of babies (they can have them every 19 days, give or take a few) and at least a few big pickle jars each for rotifers, baby brine shrimp and green water. All of a sudden the room you thought you had just isn't enough.

My suggestion would be to read thru a bunch of these posts. Set up and cycle an appropriate tank. Find an outlet for a couple of captive raised ponies and enjoy/learn about them. Then, once you can successfully keep the adults alive and if you still have the room, time and lots of interest, try raising a brood.

April,

I wanted to thank you for your time! I was looking for a couple of quick answers and a little advice so I could chew on this some more. Will probably work on my 150 reef until around Christmas and then maybe venture out into something new!
