I got this montipora wild caught back in April. I sat on this so I could see it color-up and I want to frag it because it is really taking off and I cannot for the life of my find the collector name on this piece.

Can somebody please help me? Possible this is not named yet?

I did not fiddle with the image color or anything which you can look in the first pick with the Bonzai and rocks. Really would like to know what this is called...

Thanks. Didn't realize this was so common since I've never seen it for sale anywhere. The coloration is really good I would have thought this to be a popular piece for most people.

Here's mine (after roughtly 5 months in my tank)- the polyps are wide open and cover most of the green:

That is pretty crazy how your polyps are covering all the green.

I've gotten good growth from mine over the last couple of months but I do not have the polyps so crazy like that...

Mine is under a Radion Pro.

Is there a reference database somewhere online that lists the various "collector" name corals out there like the Red Dragon, Pearlberries, Red Planets etc?

here is a picture of this same monti battling Copps purple satin porites, and winning. I have been helping the porites out.

these guys get out of control fast. A neat Old school coral. If you can get to the point where you can nuke them the edges can sometimes get purplish

Mine spongodes look exactly the same.

For something that pops in my tank it is really surprising that this didn't end up with some sort of a name a few years ago.

Thanks for the clartification on lack of the name, I simply didn't realize that it was a run of the mill Monti.

Fosters has been calling it "Hodag's" for over ten years now. How's that grab ya?

I always thought this guy would be off the hook with red or blue polyps. I hoped and hoped but they never came.

All the spongodes/confuse I've seen have darker polyps. I have a similar one that has an almost yellowish base and pink polyps. Has a spongodes growth pattern, just not a color variant I've seen. Looks similar to yours.

Here is mine when I first got it.....

It's developed a similar branching pattern to the one you posted. Someone once told me it was a lantana monti, but IMHO it's not. Probably just a variant of spongodes.

Monti Confusa aka spongodes

Well those are two different species that do look similar.

There are "databases" out there but they are only subject to the opinion of the writer of the database. All those names you listed are collectors because they have lineage. For example, your Montipora is M. spongodes. ORA has the same species. If it has came from the ORAs colony then it is ORA Spongodes. The lineage makes it worth collecting. Falsifying the name seems pretty shady IMO. So if you really need a name then just call it Green Montipora. http://www.orafarm.com/products/hardcoral/montipora/spongodes/

I am leaning towards Montipora capitata for yours.

Wow, thanks Frick! I think you nailed it. I will post a pic this weekend to show its growth form. Very similar to the link you posted!
