I just got back from the LFS and I was picking up a couple mushrooms when I saw this thing. I asked the guy what it was he said "I have no idea take it home and find out, let me know." He tossed it in a bag and gave it to me. Honestly I don't care if it's invasive it's gorgeous!!! 20170405_190144.jpg

I'd say you scored yourself a really nice leptoseris. They like low light and moderate/low flow and no real need for supplemental feeding though they will extend their sweeper tentacles, which aren't that long, to feed.

IDK if that is a lepto, can't really see any eyes on it. Looks a bit like one though, or a striped shroom.

Are the edges soft and fluttering in flow or is it flesh on a plating skeleton? Even if it is just a shroom it looks like a very nice morph so nice score for a free-be.

To the touch it's hard, but when it catches flow the outer edge does flutter a bit not very much though

If this is a lepto does anyone have any good tips for placement and care to offer? I'm not finding much online about it but seems to like placement that of a mushroom nearly.

Also sweeper tenticles were mentioed, about how long could I excpet these to get?

A lepto wouldn't flutter at all, but a mushroom would retract/contract when prodded as it is completely soft. If it is a mushroom, I don't see a mouth. I agree that it's very cool looking either way. And yes, flow and light conditions are similar.

This thing is hard, I have several mushrooms and it doesn't act like on when touched or prodded. Very strange I must say. I'm hoping it does ok so I can see what happens as it grows and hopefully catch it feeding maybe.

It's a lepto, I saw the pictures in the other post you put in the general discussion forum and the top down shot where it appears to be brown you can see that it has a skeleton. The edges of leptos will flutter in the current as when they are open their flesh, much like a chalice, extends past the skeleton, though not the same extent as a chalice. The mouths are also not always as apparent on some of the more monochromatic variants, I use that loosely because as I said in my above post this is a VERY pretty green variation, unlike the jack-o-lantern variety where the mouths are screamingly obvious. The mouths on the ones I have are hardly discernable but, if you look closely you can find them. As for care requirements I mentioned a couple in my earlier post, it should be more than fine in mushroom coral light and flow conditions and the sweepers really aren't that long, at least on mine there not, about an inch or less. As they grow they'll encrust any rocks that they're on and will form a shelf if open space is next to its "growing path"

Thank you for checking out the other post, I have been looking up various varieties of the leptos and this there are some that definitely look similar to this one. There is one chalice I came across with a common name of convict chalice. It too is remarkably close to what I have here. Part of me is really hoping its not a chalice as I've been reading of high aggression from some types. I will place this guy in a bit lower light where there is a steady low flow around him when I get home this evening.

Is it bad that coming home to rush to my reef and see if there's anything new happening is the highlight of my evening? :lolspin: I think sometimes my dog is calling me names with his eyes cause I quickly greet him at the door and bail out to my tank just to stand there and stare at water :fish1: :bounce1:

Definitely not alone, first thing I do when I get home is kiss the wife and kid, then off to the tanks to feed the critters and check the water parameters.
