The reason they look like some sort of rock flower anemone to me is the way the tentacles look around the edges combines with that sort of white stripey pattern very much remind me of patterns I've seen on other anemones, I've also seen some pretty plain jane ones at one of my LFS that looked a lot like the OP's picture. So if its not some sort of rock flower nem perhaps its another closely related? Not trying to disagree with you as I trust your experience with all of your Florida snorkeling experience and I'm certain you've forgotten more about that habitat than I'll ever know because of my only having snorkeled in that geographical location a small handful of times, just wanted to explain my thought process as to why I thought flower nemI have a hard time believing these are getting identified as rock flower anemones! I collect them in the wild and have many in my tanks. IMHO (and that of my wife who snorkels with me as well) these are not rock flower anemones, they are Palys.
Al, you asked to be pointed in the right direction. Have a look at these: https://www.google.com/search?q=gre...PPsqjRAhWCQyYKHWRCAXsQsAQIGw&biw=1323&bih=702
Now compare the ones in the OP's photo to these: https://www.google.com/search?q=gre...w=1323&bih=702#tbm=isch&q=rock+flower+anemone
And I'll be the first to admit that the rock flowers in the link are the very cool, ultra colorful ones. In the Keys, on shallow reef flats we find lots and lots of very basic tan, green, off white and brown rock flower anemones as well.
