What meeting would you rather attend? Would you rather go to Shaumberg, or have every other one in the West subburbs and every other one in the city. This way it is closer to way more people.

Western Burbs woudl be great.

Western Burbs woudl be great.

This is the true central location. Somewhere along 355 or i88.

Lagrange, Downers Grove, OakBrook, Lombard and many others would be good.

Schaumberg is nice, but it is certainly not central.

Schaumburg is good. I think we have looked at holding some meetings in other places on several occasions. The key is someone coming up with a place to have them.

The Schaumburg library location is free and they have been reasonable with us, even with our frag swaps. If you have an alternative location, check it out and let us know! :)

Schaumburg or west burbs is fine....but the challenge the CMAS board has is finding a place to have the meetings. This exact discussion has occured a number of times and nobody has found a meeting location that is free of charge and will hold a standing reservation for the club.

Doug can speak more to the challenges.

Also, the last time they plotted out the membership on a map, Schaumburg was the center....but that was a while ago.

Somewhere along 355 ,i88 or 290 would work for us.
as scubaduderon said:

Just a daring thought.....
This conversation has come up numerous times.
Basically the concept is that people downtown and south chicago feel left out as they would have to travel a large amount of time to merely make the meeting. Everyone thinks a location is good if it's within 20 minutes of them.........

If there are that many people who cannot make it due to location--why not start a second club that meets downtown/south to provide those folks with a place to meet? I mean chicago is certainly large enough to support two reef clubs.
Maybe once a year have a large combo meeting where everyone can get together.

Just a thought.

The Naperville Library has open rooms

The Naperville Library has open rooms

They allow non profit organisations to meet for free, have numerous rooms available in their system, and have an online application.

I'm not a lawyer but I believe we qualify for free meetings there.

The application can be found on the lower lefthand corner under Meeting Rooms Here: http://www.naperville-lib.org/

I also belong to a large car club and we have this same issue as well with members covering all of Northern Illinois. We too end up meeting in Schaumburg as it is a convenient location and close to the expressways. The fact is unfortunately not everyone can be accommodated due to where they live.

I think no matter what location is decided (if changed) there are going to be people that are happy and some that aren't. maybe there can be multiple locations changing each meeting. One north, one near or in the city, on south, one west, etc. Problem is too many people will not go if its not close enough for them. Thats the same reason more people don't do group orders unless it's locally convienient for them. JMO

Here's my take on membership / meetings.

I've been a member for 5 years and have attended all but maybe 3-4 meetings.

According to the CMAS Website there are approximately 120 or so members. There is a group of members that I have only ever seen at the Swap Meets and another group that I have never seen at a meeting - not sure if they sign up to receive the newsletters or what. Then there's the rest of the members - a group that comes to some or all of the meetings.

As for location, I live in Park Ridge which may be centrally located (depending on who you talk to and how you look at it). Schaumburg is convenient for me since it is only a mile or two off the highway and rarely has that highway been tied up. If I had to take side roads, the trip time would likely double. I'd have no problem going somewhere else, as long as it was highway accessible. Naperville, as has been suggested, is 45 minutes in good traffic. Getting into the city on side roads and highway (even on Saturdays) can sometimes be problematic. I'm sure I'd go to meetings that are more distant for me, but I'd consider the topic more before deciding whether or not to go.

Replotting our membership would be a great idea, but do you include those members that only come to swaps or those that don't come at all or those that sign up so they can get their whole family into the Shedd for $15? As has been mentioned, its hard to please everybody with a location.

jcm1229....

i just sent in my application this week to join CMAS. i was unaware of the $15 family entry fee to the Shedd Aquarium. i just reviewed the CMAS website and saw no mention of this. where can i find this info?

thanks

What I should have said was the annual / bi-annual field trip to the Shedd for CMAS members - where we have traditionally received complimentary admission for our families.
