What parts of the world are polyps commonly collected?

Lets get a list going.

If you can add in if they are collected on offshore reefs, tide pools, exposed reef at low tide, ect, from each area also, even better!

I have been looking for this info for a loooong time, and have not been very successful.

Anyone have this info?

Lots of zoas from Vietnam turning up in Japan recently. No Deepwater Japanese Zoas though. They don't exist. ;)

Oh now, be careful what you say. Deepwater Japanese Zoanthids do in fact exist, their presence has been confirmed by Dr. Reimers. They are not however, the same colorful morphs commonly collected and sold under the moniker Japanese Deepwater Zoas. ;)

Good clarification. :)

Having been lectured about what's available in Japan by people in the US in my own tank thread, I've started to get overly simplistic about the issue. :spin1:

ok, this might be a long one... Basically it's all about polyp size for the most part.

Zoanthids with the smaller polyps are generally from the Solomon Islands, such as tubs blues, spiderman blues, asterina pinks, zombie eyes, rastas, etc... Most blue zoanthids tend to come in from the Solomons, and the green center pink palys come from there as well. The "newly discovered" fizzy lizzies are dime a dozen from the Solomons. Most of the zoanthids from there have crazy colors when they come in and those end up getting more boring in captivity, so if all the zoanthid name scammers let their zoas settle in for 6 months you wouldn't see that many different morphs.

Case in point, these aren't from the Solomons, but these are eagle eyes

There's a sucker born every minute and that sucker probably paid like $50 a polyp for eagle eyes.

Solomon Islands also has raspberry limeades, eclipse yellow (recently renamed dragonball z's by yet another scammer), fire and ice, and eye of rah. Those are the ones that come wrapped in newspapers.

Zoanthids from Fiji are pretty large, these include eagle eyes, dragon eyes, orange bam bams, creamsicles, etc... The Solomons have eagle eyes too, but the polyps are a bit different and smaller.

Zoanthids from Vietnam more often than not are radioactive dragon eyes and wham'n watermelons. Those are the big colonies you see on birdsnest skeletons. Jokers can come in from Vietnam too.

Indonesia has of kedd reds, most of the metallic palys like my bloody valentines, aog's, blue palys, utter chaos, etc... Indo and Vietnam are where the "deepwater Japanese" zoanthids come from, and by "deepwater Japanese" they mean "shallow dirty water." Most of the time those crap out in transit, and it's because the water they come from is so crappy that the rocks have too many absorbed nutrients and bacteria go crazy in the shipping bags. "Ice bergs" also come from there (picked a name at random from the literally 20+ different names for those on zoaid), and those have been rebranded 5-6 times in the last few months.

Aussie zoanthids are usually two tone and boring, I was going to find pictures on zoaid, but by page three I wanted to throw up after seeing basically the same 6 zoanthids named 47 different times.

Thank You for this! Now everyone can know the truth!

oops, that was my bad on that one that it got edited :)

Sometimes I'm not so good with keeping things pc and some four letter words find their way in there...

Don't forget Hawaii and Caribbean ...a lot of PEs come out of Hawaii and a lot of nice zoas from the Carribean. That's where a lot of the ones you see on Coral Morphologic comes from.

PEs are collected not only from Hawaii, but also the Caribbean and Porto Rico. I would assume they can be harvested throughout the Indopacific, although I don't know that for sure.

Great info, do you know what the zoas from the different parts of the ocean like for water quality?

Usually the nicest ones come from the worst water, like near runoff or drainage areas with high nutrients and sometimes turbid water. I've seen some really nice blue zoanthids in Baja diving in about 20-25 ft in really clear water though so it depends on the area. You can usually tell by the rock they're on, if the rock is clean and brighter then they're from cleaner water, if the rock is brown, black or looks dirty then they're from dirtier water. The amount of macro algae on the colony is usually a dead giveaway too.
