from what I have seen, the price of the fish is based on the frequency of collection not neccisarily how rare they are in the wild.
The collection frequency or lack thereof for the more expensive fish can be the result of a few additional factors that will also determine the price. They are:

1. Deeper habitat - Additional dive equipment is needed and the increased difficulty of catching deep water fish. These dives are dangerous and their are very few divers out there that are willing to risk their lives to collect fish for the marine hobby trade.
Ex: Peppermint Angels.

2. Isolated territory - Some fish are only know to come from a certain island or area and these may not be inhabited or have facilities that are capabale of sustaining fish collection businesses. Most collectors have to travel to these areas and can only get a limited amount of fish in one collection trip.
Ex: Gem tangs.

The reason noted above generally apply to the more expensive fish $1000 +. There are several others in the $200-$1000 range that are prices the way they are based on size, type of fish, appearance, and capture requirements.

I'm kicking myself right now, since RCT stopped breeding and selling angels. Ever since I saw Julian's 15 gallon reef with a resplendent angel in a magazine in the early 90's, it was a dream of mine to keep a resplendent angel. Recently, I adjusted the tank inhabitants in my 180 in order to accomodate one, which meant getting rid of my Emperor Angel that I grew from juvenile. But, Alas, I am too late. :( I should have jumped on one when they were for sale before.:sad1:

That sucks. These are one of those fish that will probably not be showing up in the US anytime soon since they are no longer being brought back from the Ascension Islands.
I was also bummed to hear that RCT was not producing any new fish for the time being. I tried for two years to get a pair of his Interruptus Angels.

I feel your pain - I'm in the same boat :( Would looooooooooove a harem of them. I can almost taste it!

pygmy angels aren't naturally found in pairs. they are found in harems. 1-2 males and multiple females. to get a collected pair is literally impossible. However you can try to pair them up yourself. Reefhotspot gets in pairs every now and then (RC sponsor) i think they have a pair now.

Pair is male and female. This does not mean they will spawn (which is mated pair)

I guess someone remembered my tirade a few months back about the definition of mated pairs.

I don't care if they spawn or not, I just don't want them to kill each other.

And coralite, I will read the this whole thread eventually, but can you tell me what page is the 'definition of mated pairs' on?

Thanks zemuron114 for the link. I chipmarked the page.

Centropyges will not fight as long as you have a true female/juvenile and a male. Most of the flames you see in the LFS for whatever reason(s) generally are already male. With patience & diligence one can usually eventually find a female, though . Of course if the above mentioned vendor has pairs, that would be quickest.

Hey Angel Fish

that's a beautiful pair of flames you have in you avatar. I'm in the process of ordering a trio of Cherubs from Inland. It's the only place I know that sells them that way. I was going to try a pair of cherubs and a pair of flames, but I don't know how that will work out. It's may turn out to be to costly. Anyway ever hear of someone have more than on pair, mated or not, of centropyges in their tank?

Thanks for the compliment :D

There are a few people around who have that. I think the issue is more of the logistics of trying to add everybody to the tank at the same time. I found a nice mate for my cherub angel, but I was afraid to add the little fish to the tank because I don't think at this point the other angels (flame pair, Herald's, Singapore) would allow it. Once your angels become well established, it can be hard to add a new angel.

Assuming your tank is big enough and well arranged maximizing grazing surface area and hiding places, etc. - those fish should probably get along fine.

I assume you've seen Jaken's flame angel harem - he has something like 5 in the same tank - pretty cool IMO!

what kind of angel is this in english

i was looking at a japanese website that was mentioned in this thread

angelfish.jpg

I'd be willing to bet that the juvenile masked angel in the image is from those which were reared at the Waikiki aquarium. The last time I saw a pair of masked angels was in 2001. I was bagging them up for a friend to send to Japan. I think he paid $6K for the pair but sold them to an aquarium store over there for almost double that.
