What salt for SPS dominated??

Any brands that are well regarded do me fine. RC, IO, SeaChem Reef salt, D&D h2o & Aquamedic Reef Salt will all give great results imho.

I used to use Oceanic, but the high calcium and magnesium content made it very difficult to keep alkalinity above 6 - 7 so I switched to Reef Crystals.

That's a good point. Just another reason to mix it with Instant Ocean, which is generally slightly low in Ca and high in Alk.

Reef Crystals here.. Actually had a bad experience with Seachem. SPS were not doing too well with it after 4 months of use. Once I realized nothing else had changed in my tank during that 4 months, I decided to switch back to my original.. Tank is now recovering thankfully. I may have gotten a bad batch in there somewhere. My suggestion is, if you're carbon dosing, you have to be more careful with choosing your salt. I've also heard very good things about coralife salt.

coralife all dayyyyy - went from tropic marin to coralife a while back after a guy traded me for like 2 fat boxes of it. pretty bomb stuff

reef crystals. Live aquaria also uses it that's good enough for me...

So does Sea World in Orlando! I've been using RC for a few years. I also have to add a little epsom salts to boost the Mg. I've been having great results.

I don't understand this statement, I use Oceanic and have no issues keeping my alk at desired levels. Typically wouldn't low mag cause this?

I am using DD H2Ocean now, great salt. I used RC for 3 years and never was happy with it. Before that I used Tropic Marin Pro and it was great also.

Anyone with experience with red sea coral pro? the levels look good for my tank, I have been unhappy with the alk in RC so I started mixing with IO...anyone have any background on the long term track record of this brand?

So i finally decided that im going with Tropic Marin Pro. My tank is only 30g so 5g water changes are going to last me a year with the 200g bucket i bought. Im going to start a new thread and i will take pictures of my tank now, and then every month or every other month to see if any improvement in color. (right now my purples are a bleached out)

on my second bucket...i do weekly 5g changes on a 50g sps tank...have no toubles keeping levels in check (other than ph) with very minimal extra dosing (unsatuated kalk 2x week/mag 1x week/seachem calcium powder 1x week)...but the tank has only about 15 frags (for now)...levels na-0 phos-0 ph-7.9-8.0 alk-9 mag-1350 cal-450

when i tested the levels of red sea pro i was kinda concered with the high alk levels alk-14 but cal and mag were in check (ro/di h20/ salinity-1.026/78f/accerated with air stone/salifert test kit alk/cal/seachem reef status mag)

even with the elevated alk levels in the salt mix after a 10% weekly water change there less than a .5 change in dkh

were you mixing RC with IO to lower alk levels or raise them?

Last edited:
was mixing with IO to lower them, was getting dkh on RC of 12-13....on the long salt thread I read that alk on Red Sea Coral Pro was 7, with cal at 490. I liked the higher cal and lower alk, I keep my tank around 8.7 dkh and 420-450 cal so I am worried about water changes being a mini alk spike using RC, so I started mixing with IO to lower the alk

The Tropic Marine Pro looked good, but there is a thread going in the Reef Discussion forum talking about getting dkh that is as low as 4-5 which scared me. That left the Red Sea Coral Pro and DD H20 as the options, and the DD is way expensive

What dkh are you getting from the Red Sea Coral Pro?

nevermind, I just saw I was looking at the old measurements of the Red Sea Coral Pro and the new black bucket has much higher alk....so looks like good ole IO for me

I have been using RC for a year, switched from IO.
And alk is consistently about 10 dkH (API) and Cal is around 470 (Salifert). I believe this is okay for SPS.

I would be fine with 10dkh, but I've never tested less than 12 via salifert and my tank is usually 8.7 salifert so even if my kit is off two points the RC is substantially higher than where I run my tank

Well I don't know why but I caved I just picked up a Box of hW. I've been using IO, and NSW up until this point, but meh I had good results with it in the past. I'd like to see if it translates moving forward. It will be at least another month before I use it though as I still have about 5 water changes worth of IO left. I have no complaints w/IO but I'd like to see if I notice a difference.
