What salt mix are you using?

I never thought the salt you used was that big of a deal.......until recently. In the last 4-5 months Ive been having major issues with my tank as a result of some really gnarly diatom outbreaks that just wouldn't go away. My tank was rockin untill all of a sudden, massive diatom outbreaks were terrorizing my system. For months I couldn't figurte out what was wrong as I watched my reef slowly die.....and it turns out that the cheap "coralife salt" I bought, had tons of sillicates in it and was the cause.Evry time I did a water change it just made things worse. After doing a test with another brand of salt and consulting with a few advanced aquarists, I've changed my salt mix and have been closely monitoring ALL of my perameters and my tank is finally on the up swing and will soon regain its former glory! Just goes to show you how the smallest things can damage our systems.

I used to use seachem and it was ok, but two months ago I switched to Kent pro and loving it. The price is right and parameters are right on.

Was using Reef Crystals, switched to Brightwell NeoMarine. Buffering and maintaining Ca/Mg/KH params seems easier and more stable.

I'm using RedSea Coral Pro.

I am having much the same issue. Seems like every time I do a water change, my cyano gets worse. I checked my RO/DI source with a hand0held TDS meter: 0.

Jake, pardon my ignorance, how did you test for silicates? Is that the same a phosphates? What salt did you switch to? Once I use up my RedSea bucket, I may make a switch.

I just use Kent Pro. Seems to work fine and I've been using it for ages. Also mixes well and doesnt leave a nasty residue on my mixing brute cans. I use the white ones so I can see if there is anything on the tub.

If you want ocean water you can get it at the UC davis lab in Bodega head. They have a pump and filter ready to go and all you have to do is call ahead of time and show up with containers. Their charge is pretty minimal.
