what should we not add to SPS tank

tankmates

I am looking to start my first SPS dominated tank. Right now I have hammer, frogspawn, torch coral, sun corals, monti cap, elegance coral and some zoas in my tank. is it ok to add SPS now or I need to take out some of the softies?

The only soft corals you have are the zoanthids everything else are LPS except the monti which is a SPS. They should be fine, many of us have mixed reefs. I would run carbon to soak up the chemicals that the soft corals give out. With that said, I personally wouldnt add too many leathers but one or 2 small ones should be fine. The hard part is keeping your system stable if you want to venture into keeping SPS.

leave em in. if it appeals to you, i say what the hey. ive seen sucessful reef tanks with all the above, plus awesome SPS corals. its more important for you to maintain WQ above all.

thanks guys. I have some algae problem, I am firing in my bio pellets and GFO and hopefully will get rid of that in next couple of months and I will start adding SPS, want to make sure my water quality is perfect.

Yeah, take care of that algae before adding sps. I was trying to rid hair algae and used GFO to aggressively and almost crash my SPS tank. GL SPS is not all that hard to keep just remember to dip.

It is difficult to keep euphyllia happy in an sps dominated tank. SPS like a lot of flow and light. Euphyllia can adapt to more light but will reduce PE with too much flow. I think it can be done though. Good luck!

agreed. i havent seen Euphyllia in the open on either the ocean or lagoon side. ive only found it in the oddest of places, underneath an abandoned boat dock in a protected cove, growing in patches on the bare sand. the water was very still in the area. i have some in my tank, tucked on down on the bottom of the tank, corner area.

Yeah in general you should be okay with any/all the stuff you mentioned IMHO.

My understanding is that running carbon is ... advisable? - if there are a lot of big softy stuff like leathers, toadstools and such. Apparently SPS can be collateral damage in the chemical war they wage on each other.

Why can't we all just get along??

Speaking of torches, I have a torch in my SPS tank I like a lot. I think euphyllias are great of you can find little eddys in the current for them. Which most of us can.

I'm starting to regret putting in a hollywood stunner chalice in my stony reef. I also have two euphyllia in there, both are in the corner of the tank or in the undertow.

It is always best to keep the montipora caps as low as you can on the rocks. They do grow fast but I believe they help make large sps reefs complete.

Take the Monti Cap out while you still have a chance. The Cap grows out of control you will notice daily growth.

This is not a negative, this is a positive. You frag it often and trade it in at LFS or with other reefers. That's what I do and I love my monti's, helps manage the costs of the hobby.
