What size fittings for a MJ 1200?

I haven't gotten any responses from the DIY forum, so here goes...

I'm planning on making a Kalk reactor using a MJ 1200. Can anyone tell me what size fittings to use? I would like to use unions so I can remove the MJ for maintenance. TIA

it's tiny, i'm not too sure but i'd say 1/2" or 1/4".

also it isn't exactly pvc, and likes vinyl tubing in my experience. You can tube vinyl to a barb that adapts to PVC.

Thanks Art. Here's what ProvateJoker said in the dyi forum (fyi) -

"Hard fittings won't fit. Use soft vinyl tubing. 5/8" I.D. on the input. 1/2" I.D. on the output."

awesome! sorry I didn't have the exact sizes for ya.

Yeah use the vinyl tubing and adapt it to PVC if you'd like. Though you won't need unions really, since tubing comes off and replaces easily / cheaply. Which then gives you another problem, make sure these tubes are on GOOD and tight. Use plastic vinyl tubing clamps. I believe MarineDepot has them.

The mj1200 will fit 1/2 inch uni-seals.

I have used 5/8" id, but 1/2" id flexible vinyl tubing works best with a clamp if possible.

I have a mj1200 on my GEO kalk reactor

Isn't the MJ1200 too much for a kalk reactor? I see a lot of them only using 400 and 600s.

Hey Sid, long time no speak. Hows your tank doing?

Oh. I read somewhere that I should use a 1200 because the smaller ones get clogged. But if you say others are using the smaller ones, I'll use the 900 that I have. I was going to buy a new 1200 too. Thanks D.

My 55gal has been neglected because I've been busy preparing the 120gal. I just leaked tested the 120 and I plan on putting my cooked live rocks in it this weekend. There's still lots to do, but I wanted to get the tank cycling while I do the other things, ie my DIY Kalk reactor.

How many fish you got now in that 300?

How long have you had the 120? Any pics or build thread?

Currently, I have 0 fishes in the tank. I shut down the tank for awhile.

There were several DIY Kalk threads and their specs. IIRC they only really used 400-600s. But then it depends on the reactor.

the smaller MJ's shouldn't clog if you maintain them well. Every few months take it out and run it in a bath of diluted vinegar / water, and then replace. Should keep it in tip top shape =)

I bought the tank used about 2 years ago. I don't really have a build thread. I gave up taking pictures because it was taking me forever to do anything. Click pic for larger picture.
