i have start with a all fish tank 58 gal wet /dry system in the tank i have 3 bags of live sand and about 50 lbs of live rock

when i purchased my equipment the store associate said i needed a 350 gph pump

what size sump pump do i need and how big is to big?

Return pump should be 3 - 5x display volume. 180 - 300 GPH after headloss. With a small sump, stay on the low side of that. The 350 GPH pump after headloss should be fine.

The Quiet One 4000 would be an excellent choice. Very quiet and excellent energy efficiency. I have one available, if you're interested send me a PM.

i agree with sjm the sump pump only needs to be 3-5x tank volume. the rest of your flow comes from powerheads or a closed loop.

Used to be people only had 1 pump, and wanted as much flow as possible. Now there are more choices. A popular 2nd choice was a closed loop
So, 2 large pumps that provided all of the movement needed

Things have changed, I am downgrading from 1400+gph to approx 900gph. This the approx gph that my skimmer can handle. So almost all of the aquarium water is skimmed
Then I am adding Tunze's for more flow

In a smaller tank powerheads are a good option
You have to weigh the flow you want, VS the electric that will be used.
By downgrading my pump, and upgrading adding the Tunze - I am going from 3000gph to approx 4400gph of movement in my 125g. AND using 1/2 the electricity

Choose your pump carefully, balance the gph against your overflow/drains, vs the skimmer gph, and take into account the wattage used. I have seen 2 different pumps that move the same amount of water, but one uses a TON more electric

Some pumps are designed to pump from basment, some from under the tank
