I was looking to buy a protein skimmer. I have a 55G tank. I looked at the ramoras prizms seaclones coralifesuper skimmer. I also seen the knock off back pack skimmers on Ebay. A friend of mine bought one. Hes really happy with it. What do you guys recommed. I seen some skimmers that are as much as 1,00.00. I was looking to spend 100-125 in that price range

Somewhere just a very little bit north of that 125 (lfs price) is the Urchin, which is a good skimmer; it runs in my 52 and is simple and about as efficient as I need.

i know money is always an issue but if you buy a cheap skimmer now you'll only be reselling it for a loss later. plus you'll give yourself headaches trying to constantly dial it in. Don't buy anything cheaper than a remora.
Also you can always go on the sell forum here and look for used ones

How about a used Euro-reef es-5-2. Awesome skimmer that you will never regret purchasing. 140.00 -150.00 , but runs in sump.

I just bought a euro reef es5 from for 165. havent got it up and running yet but looks like an awsome skimmer!!

Coralife Super Skimmer 125 will be the best performing skimmer in the $125 range. I have the 65 on my 40 gallon tank, it's pretty decent, from what I've read from people who have the 125 on a tank less than 75 gallons, they all like it.

Only thing to worry about with the CSS skimmers, is they have a tendency suddenly start skimming like crazy, throwing water into the collection cup, which then overflows at a very high rate. So you'll want to use the CSS as in-sump only.

This has happened to me once, the only negative was that it dumped the skimmate back into my system, which then got skimmed back out.

Stay away from the prizms I tried one on a 75 they do pull a fare amount of skimate but they do not pull enough for a 75 or 55 maybe a 30 and would be ok for a 10 but chews something else I like my ER best of all.

i agree i had a prizm on my 50 and it was trash i have a 65 superskimmer on my 50 and it works great, i have it as a hong on back but they can be used in sump too, i havent had an overflow yet but well see

Hello I also have a 55 gallon set up and use the css 65. I figured thatd be big enough since there really isnt 55 gallons of water in it anyway because of the lr and substrate. It works really great for the price it really rocks IME
