What to keep away from reef tanks?

Can anyone give me some examples. I have some strange bacterial blooms going on in my tank...

So far I know not to keep...

- Windex
-Frebreez and Glade plug ins/candles
- Cat littler boxes
- no carbon dosing

Any other ideas?

Frying oil, or cooking in general. Skimmer can absorb those back into water. I once accidentally smoked oil and the skimmer stopped producing foam for 12 hours.

Some people like to spray Lysol. Especially in the cold and flu season.

Don't.

Aerosols, or any type of strong odor producing substance. Like mentioned above this could be sucked into the skimmers air intake.

If your tank is deep,watch your deodorant and any lotions.

Test reagents. Don't test over your tank even though the light there makes for easy reading. Don't use antibacterial soap before working in your tank. The only time I ever use it is after I clean my skimmer cup.
Personal opinion is that antibacterial soaps are evil and cause long term problems to human health. Think antibiotic resistant strains of XYZ

He is saying he has a bacterial bloom in his tank and he's trying to track the cause. He is saying he is not carbon dosing. At least that's how I interpreted it after rereading it
The first time I read it I just skimmed over it and didn't catch the no carbon dosing. I thought someone was compiling a list of stuff not to do around their tank. Not a bad idea for a new thread if it doesn't already exist.

It's easy to overspray and get a little bit in. That said, I just spray windex on a towel and then clean the glass...

Just saying (advanced practice nurse here...), I don't use anything in my house (period) that has any kind of man-made scent to it. The vast majority of the substances used to make things smell "good" are known to be endocrine disruptors. Why anyone would knowingly put that stuff on their skin, in their clothes, or spray it around their house is beyond me. Clean your house with white vinegar and dilute bleach and it will smell plenty good. Febreeze, Lysol, Glade scent stuff, fabric softeners, etc will kill you slowly.

+1, this is a habit I picked up in Germany. I use RO/DI water mixed with vinegar to clean everything and I try to avoid putting anything directly on my skin if at all possible. My wife does like the Scentsy candles though...
