A little cheaper alternative to Morton's:

jeeze I guess this thread goes to show that anything can turn personal. I was just looking to see if I got a good price on salt...looks like I did ok, 50 shipped for seachem reef. I guess the posts about the LFS stores have some validity in here as well. while its not that I want to have all of the LFS close down, I don't really, I would love to see a store open up that actually cares about the customers, and more so the critters that they get. I understand the whole rent argument as I too own a business, but i have found that once I quit focusing on the amount of profit and loss on everything, I actually made more. I went off the law of averages, thinking in the end everything will work itself out and it has so far. I might have to open a thread about LFS and see if there is a store that now exists with these values.
as for my .02 about the LFS, I have gotten more misinformation out of them than anywhere else, and that misinformation has almost cost me being in the hobby. I dont understand the general attitude when dealing with the lfs, and I really don't get that they are constantly out of what you need when you need it. If I have to wait for a week for an LFS to get something, I might as well order online save some money and have it delivered to my door.

It's hard to staff a store with knowledgeable people for what most can afford to pay. I mean think about it. How many reefers could afford to be in this hobby if they had to work for LFS wages?

Grim,

"LOL buying on the internet is the reason for high unemployment???"

Not really, but answer this: What would happen to the local government $$ if ALL or our purchases were done online ( i.e. - NO TAX ).

I think it's only a matter of time before legislation comes around that forces taxes on internet purchases. I believe that is one of the reasons local govts are coming up short lately. There is FAR less revenue coming in from sales tax due to online purchases.

I use marinedepot for almost ALL of my drygoods. I have had excellent customer service and NO problems with returns if something is broken.
They also help out a LOT on the phone and have been very knowledgeable.

If you want a LFS with NONE of the problems mentioned above, vist Aqua Imports in Boulder. I dont go anywhere else now.
Just try to make sure you go during the week when Mike or Tom are there.

NOW for the back on topic part: Has anyone compiled a list of all the different vendors for salt? I see a lot of suggestions but it would take me a while to compile all of the suggestions into a single list that shows how much we pay for salt per gallon of SW factoring in shipping vs free shipping.

Grim, you need a dumbwaiter to get your salt buckets down to & up from the basement..... that gets me thinking. Electric conveyor belt from the driveway around the back of the house to the kitchen, click a switch and it routes into the bumbwaiter to be sent to the basement pantry right next to the fish room:dance:

No more aching backs

Avoiding oppressive sales taxes is one of the beauties of the internet. I do see the writing on the wall with the way state budgets are going now. Only a matter of time before they will have to start charging the base state taxes anyway which I am cool with. It's all the BS local add ons I oppose. Once you figure in taxes and shipping the playing field will get more level.

Got my forum boards a little mixed up. We should change the direction of the discussion lest we get the thread locked.

It's reef centrals fault. They changed to look of the forums so they look like another one I hang out on where we can discuss such issues. :D

Back to your regularly scheduled banter.

So what does salt have to do with pet store reviews and dusty t5 bulbs anyway i think its a good idea to sell dry goods at a wholesale price from your home

It has to do with the conversation because people brought up that buying salt and other things online is killing the lfs. However there has to be a happy medium between making money at a lfs and not feeling like your getting ripped off as a consumer if you happend to know what it costs for a product online.

I know i was being sarcastic. Well maybe the lfs needs to stop marking their prices up and then maybe they might be able to draw in more customers its like everybody is trying to get rich off others. I been to stores that had items marked up double from the store i just left which was another LFS. Bottom line is the LFS is gonna have to compete with online prices either roll or get rolled over.

Forget the cost of the location, employees and everything else that comes with LFS. It is often times impossible to compete with on line vendors simply due to the amount of bulk purchased. I will tell you I have been at an LFS and we couldn't order the salt at our cost for what some of the online companies sell it for. While I was fine taking a hit to draw in customers, ownership did not agree. Also take into account that a lot of smaller internet businesses simply drop ship with no overhead. Just my .02 from being in the industry, but I too buy things online if I can't get a store to price match.
