My experience is that my RO outlasts my DI, roughly 2:1. I use color changing DI, so it's easy to see when I need to get busy. And when changing my DI doesn't give tds output of 0, then it's membrane replacement time.
My understanding is that as a general practice, one gets greater longevity from the membrane by doing fewer larger filtrations, versus more frequent smaller ones. I don't run my water filter for a gallon. I usually do multiple 5g buckets worth when I fire it up.
