I think the most exciting thing about starting a new reef tank is
the excitement never ends
always learning something new
always finding something new
and just when you think you got it all down, you find a way to make it better
Seeing my plumbing actually... well... work. And not leak. That's the bomb. And knowing that I did it on my own... nutting up with the drill and all. Might end up coated in oil based urethane, but darn, it was fun to do!
1) collecting the equipment
2) filling up the tank and adding the livestock
3) 2 weeks later, taking the current tank down the upgrading to a larger tank.
For me it's always the planning stage associated with setting up a new tank that is the best. The anticipation and dreaming of what it will look like, what it will become, what the final product will be...it's sooooo much fun....sort of like aquatic foreplay.
I think one of the nicest things is the smell of freshly mixed saltwater in a brand new tank. It makes me remember every one of the many tanks I have had over the years.
But, who am I kidding? The planning stage never really ends in this hobby, now does it?
