Whats going on with my Haddoni carpet anemone

Hey Guys,

Im trying to figure out whats up with my green haddoni. Ive had it for almost 1 year. My tank is about 1.5-2 years old. It started getting really big and and super sticky. It Feeding would taking just a few moments. Its looked really good and it was growing. I was feeding silver sides, raw shrimp, and squid. Everything was great.

Then about 2-3 months ago it lost its stickyness, take twenty minutes just to get it to eat, and its expelling its zoos once a week and deflates nearly everyday. Its about half it's size amd its mouth is open.

Heres the setup

1.26 salinity
2 AI Prime at 100% for 9 hours with red and green at 90% (to reduce algae issues)
No detectable nitrates
Running 130 Vertec skimmer
60 Gallon cube with 13 gallon sump
76.5°
9.5 dkh
1500 mag
420 cal
Chemi blue in return chamber
3 fish and some shrimp
With soft corals, zooanthid, mushrooms, Lps - (nothing touching anemone)
Tons of LRock
Everything else is looking healthy and growing
Cheato algae in fuge

so what did you change right before the anemone started reacting differently?

also, silverside is not the best food. They are not human grade food so they may go bad during transportation or storage (from lack of regulations). Then you end up freezing it and one of those bad silverside can kill your anemone. not the first time it happened

Other then a better skimmer, its pretty much the same. I thought flow was disturbing it so i went from a wave maker down to one fan blowing to the other side of the cube.

I slowed down on feeding silver sides recently as well. I was thinking Possibly a silver side made it sick. But im not sure what to do with it now.


My only other concern was the lighting isnt strong enough but... It was doing really well for almost a year so...

I had caulerpa go sexual on me two weeks ago, hence the hair algae break out you see. But the anemone started down hill months ago.

seeing how it's gaping and losing stickiness, I would pull it out to cipro treat right away.

I had 3 Haddoni carpets.. while 2 are fine, my green started slowly going down hill. It wasn't even gaping, but suddenly one day lost its ability to attach to the glass and died. It probably took 1 month to go down hill..

I thought leaving it in DT would be fine since all my other nems are fine, and water is very clean.. but it didn't work out. so I would start treatment right away

Wouldnt pulling it off the bottom of the tank and detaching it from the rock and glass under the sand stress it out horribly?

moving it definitely brings some stress, but treating it can rapidly improve health. I think Haddoni reacts very well to treatment.. it shouldn't be too hard to pull it off the glass. use a credit card and slowly scrape off an edge, then use your fingers to peel. even easier if it's on the rock, just stick your finger behind it an edge.

since you can't figure out what's wrong, I would use new salt water in QT. use medication or not is up to you.

It probably will be a good thing and agree with you. Im not setup with a QT though and i am avoiding diging up the sand bed... But i probably need too.

Well you really shouldn't feed a carpet silversides or certain shimp like frozen table shrimp at the grocery market as they contain certain preservatives and other crap that can make your anemone sick. PE Mysis and fresh salmon is the best imo. My guess, since you had it as long as you did without issue, is that you fed it a silverside or shrimp that wasn't good and that caused your anemone to get sick. Similar to us, eat at Burger King and you'll feel just like your anemone does. At this point, you'll have to remove him and treat with Ciprofloxacin, thread created by Mihn is on sticky. The shrimp I feed him is organic raw wild blue or pink ocean shrimp from whole foods, healthier than I would eat myself Lately he's been getting squid and all my other anemones are thriving on that. I'm more than happy to try salmon but I've never heard of feeding salmon. Would you leave the skin on?

Either on or off is fine.
