Whats so cool about mantis??

The fascination that they can exert enough force to break open shells and even glass with their tiny little arms. They also have quite the variety of colors. And lastly, there are two different types. Spearers and Clubbers. Both of which are very fascinating.

Intelligence.
These aren't your average inverterbrate, you can SEE them formulate a plan, and then execute it. My P. cilliata would stalk a damsel like a cat, freeez when the damsel coould see her, creep when vision was blocked.

They seem to have PERSONALITY...and that is what *I* find so intersting....mine almost ended up on the bottom of my husband's shoe because he was an unwanted hitchhiker in my display...but once we put him in his own little tank, I really began enjoying him. He seems almost 'friendly' towards my little 3 year old daughter, and she thinks he's a hoot.

You lucky kids and your personality plus mantis shrimp!

Mine just sits about 1/8 of an inch out of his hole and stares at me with his beady little white eyes. Never EVER have I seen him come out!

(Oh well...it happens...I've got a variety that doesn't come out to play much...)

how long have you had the guy..... he will come out sooner or later. Mine goes in spurts of being really playful and then hiding.... i just need to get a bit bigger tank for the guy and get him some good dinner from my main tank, hehehe

I've had him for about a month or so now. Doesn't come out. He's a cave dweller...

Mine is supposed to be an active guy, but sticks to the entrance to his cave 99.9% of the time (G. smithii). I've got a nano for him to go into soon, though, so at least I'll see more of him than I currently do in a 55 refugium.

FlyGTI, what species do you have? Ball in Oskaloosa has a nice peacock I got to see last week, but other than that wasn't aware of anyone else around central Iowa that kept mantis...

Ryan, I've got a G. Affinis. Little beady white eyes, small body, peeks out of his cave from time to time. If I could coax him out, I'd take some pictures, but it doesn't look like it'll happen soon.
