Whats the Best Sand Sifter Goby?

Any other suggestions :) I'm looking for something else since my last one was a diamond. And I have read stories about them dieing for no apparent reasons aswell.

Anyone have any pictures of their dragon gobies and their bullet gobies? I never heard of them, the most common ones I've heard of are, yellow watchmen and diamond goby.

our dragon goby leaves no sand unsifted....not the prettiest of them all but it does a good job

How about some pics of them. How hardy are they? BTW are bullet and dragon gobies the same? and how much do they cost? I don't think I've seen one around.

Dragon gobies are the best for sand sifting. I got a pair from Charles and they are always buzy sifting sand.

earthboy17- You can find them at
Exotic Aquatics

They have a big selection of dragon gobies. I was there not too long ago and they have about 20+ dragon gobies to choose from from small to large.

Dragon Gobies are the best since I've 1st started reefing, I've kept and tried numerous sand sifters. The Dragon Gobies " AKA' BULLET Goby are the best as they also hang out at the middle water colomn , they also feed in the top/middle water colomn and not just the sand. The ones I've had were all mild mannered, but will get slightly territorial on the close procimity of a nest that they are building or guarding. I've had some previously eat hair algae as well ( WEIRD ). Your sand will be presite white with these guys. Bonus is that they BREED in captivity ( good coral food )

It's a love hate relationship with Dragon Gobies for me. I love them for their sand sifting and cleaning up. Hate them for their sand sifting... they don't stay in the same place they sift. They grab a mouthful and start swimming over the coral as the sand comes out of their gills. Where as other Gobies stay close to the bottom as the sand comes out of their gills.

unless this dragon sifter that I had was a special one, I personally wouldn't get one if I cared about how my reef landscape looks like.

With 4 Hydor's.... nothing will be in the same place. ;-) J/K

But you are right, I neglected to mention that... since I did not have the proper flow in my tank.

They do that, but your flow blows the sand off the rocks anyways. well for me since I have 4 Hydor #4's.

I dont have any pics onhand, but ill try to shoot some later...in the mean time, heres a link to a pic of one:

I picked mine up at ac for $15....its as hardy as they get, but what everyone else says is true....it will scatter sand everywhere...if you have sensitive corals on the sand bed it might not be the best choice but if not it does a great job...

how many would do you guys recommend for a 200g 60" x 30"?

Someone told me that sand sifters end up eating all your fauna and slowly starving to death in all but the largest tanks (say 500+). Untrue?

I love extra crispy white sand! :)

one would do the job....you can support a mated pair in a tank that size from what i hear...mine eats mysis, flakes, and even the algae sheets i put in for the tangs...i dont know if there all like this or if i just got lucky...

These look pretty cool

so which fish store in SF has em? I don't think I came across any before.

Thats the Dragon Goby , AKA' bullet goby. I say untrue about starving, ask KTTSF, he still has my dragon goby pair ( maiting pair ) which I had in my tank for a long time. 100gal previous with only 1 1/2 -2 1/4 " sand bed. They actually eat pellet, mysis, cyclopeeze, flake, krill and brine. With vitamins and supplementation I really don't know how one will starve.

I used to have them in 55 and faired very well and also spawned a lot until I stumbled into 6th ave and everyone else knows the rest of 6th ave and what those things do to your tanks. ( this was when I fist started in didn't know best ).

Also getting a cup of live sand from another reefer whom has a very established tank and mixing it with you sand also help restock your sand FAUNA.
